JOB SUMMARYThe High School Dean of Students works to promote the general well-being and social, academic, and moral progress of students in the high school. The High School Dean of Students is highly visible and accessible to students and faculty in the high school. The High School Dean of Students supervises the advisory system in the high school and promotes a mission-centered student culture. The High School Dean of Students develops policies which guide and respond to student conduct and works with faculty to maintain student discipline and build a climate of integrity and accountability. This position is a 10-month faculty contract with some on-campus availability and work required over the summer.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Student Support & AdvocacyServe as a visible, accessible point of contact for student, parent, and faculty concernsFacilitate conflict resolution between students and between students and teachersAssist in developing and implementing individualized student behavior and support plansAdvise high school students and maintain an advisory assignmentEnsure student supervision during and after school hoursConduct, Policy & AccountabilityDevelop and communicate policies that guide student conduct and behavior expectationsPartner with faculty and administrators to enforce conduct policies consistentlyMaintain accurate disciplinary records in line with policy and best practiceCommunicate with students, parents, and staff in a timely way regarding behavior and attendanceOversee the high school attendance systemAdvisory System LeadershipOversee four Grade Deans and the high school advisory programDevelop and guide advisory curricula aligned with the school's missionServe as a resource to faculty on student behavioral and developmental issuesOversee and assign duties for high school faculty and staffCulture, Community & Student LifePromote a mission-centered student culture throughout the high schoolCollaborate with the Director of Student Activities, Athletic Director, and Student Government on school-wide programs, events, and traditionsDevelop, coordinate, and manage budgets for community-building trips and student life programmingFoster school spirit and a strong sense of communityEquity, Inclusion & WellnessPartner with the Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Culture on school-wide DEI programming and initiativesSupport and facilitate civic engagement work across the high school in collaboration with the Director of Civic EngagementCollaborate closely with the School Counselor on student psychological and social health concernsAdministrative & Team LeadershipServe on the High School Support Team and High School Administrative TeamConsult regularly with the Head of High School on student life mattersCarry some teaching responsibilities based on school staffing needsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation/ExperienceB.A. requiredMaster’s degree preferred5 – 10 years’ experience as a teacher (including teaching experience in high school)Possess a strong understanding of the developmental needs of high school-aged studentsKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge and understanding of Burke’s mission and progressive philosophies and practicesDeep understanding of Burke’s high schoolStrong listening skills and empathyAbility to be clear, consistent, candid, compassionate, and to work collaborativelyExperience and ability to work effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and parents of diverse backgroundsAbility to be objective and fair while working to balance the needs of students and the needs of the School with complex and difficult issues such as discipline, integrity, and mental and emotional healthAbility to help plan, organize, and implement high school events and programsAbility to run effective meetings and share in high school dutiesAbility to write and speak effectivelyExcellent organizational and presentation skillsPossess qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctualityAbility to represent Burke and its mission to parents, prospective parents, and outside administratorsAbility to manage a demanding schedule and set prioritiesSense of humorPROCEDURE TO APPLYWe are dedicated to hiring people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and we honor the dignity and worth of all people.
