Project Engineer – BESSLeap29 is pleased to present an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to support utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Texas. This role requires a strong technical foundation in power systems, controls, SCADA, and Energy Management Systems (EMS), along with hands-on experience using engineering tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar platforms.Role OverviewThe Project Engineer is responsible for the technical delivery of large-scale BESS projects from early design through commissioning and operational handover. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, this role oversees detailed design coordination, system integration, commissioning support, and transition to operations.This position demands the ability to address complex technical challenges through critical thinking, innovation, and a holistic systems-level perspective across multiple engineering disciplines. The Project Engineer ensures technical excellence, compliance with utility interconnection requirements, and on-time delivery across multiple utility-scale assets. Confidence in presenting technical solutions and influencing executive-level decisions is essential.Key ResponsibilitiesLead and execute engineering activities on the Owner/IPP side from concept development through operational readiness.Serve as the primary technical interface between internal stakeholders and external partners, including utilities, EPC contractors, and OEMs.Coordinate and guide cross-functional teams to resolve technical risks and challenges, ensuring alignment across engineering, finance, operations, and commercial teams.Oversee EMS and controls architecture implementation, along with electrical, mechanical, and SCADA system integration.Review and approve system designs, performance models, interconnection studies, and vendor submittals.Coordinate commissioning activities and performance testing in partnership with EPCs, OEMs, and EMS providers.Support the development of internal engineering standards, templates, and tools to improve consistency, efficiency, and scalability across projects.Contribute to contract reviews and technical negotiations related to EPC scopes and major equipment procurement.Assess the commercial and economic impact of technical decisions, supporting cost-benefit analyses during design and procurement phases.Capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance execution quality.Proactively identify risks, implement value engineering solutions, and develop mitigation strategies throughout design and construction.Lead the technical transition from commissioning to operations.Education & CertificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution.Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.Professional ExperienceMinimum of 3 years’ experience in engineering roles, including at least 1 year focused on utility-scale BESS projects in Texas.Proven experience supporting renewable energy or power infrastructure projects.Strong technical grounding in power systems, controls, SCADA, and EMS.Familiarity with ERCOT interconnection standards and metering requirements.Experience using engineering tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or equivalent.Demonstrated ability to interpret, review, and validate detailed engineering documentation.Desirable SkillsKnowledge of utility interconnection agreements and commissioning processes.Experience with software-based control logic and automation system integration.Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.Adaptability in fast-paced environments with evolving project scopes and priorities.A leadership approach grounded in integrity, safety, and continuous improvement.Commitment to fostering a collaborative, inclusive engineering culture.If you are interested in this opportunity, please send your Resume through to Rob Byrom.
