Flight Software Engineer (Space)Greater Los Angeles Area, California | Full-Time, PermanentNewSpace Technical is excited to partner with an innovative engineering organisation developing advanced technologies for the space sector. As part of their growth, we're seeking an experienced Flight Software Engineer to join a highly skilled multidisciplinary team working on advanced space technologies.This is an excellent opportunity to work on mission-critical embedded software within a collaborative engineering environment. You'll contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from software architecture and development through to integration, verification and hardware testing, helping deliver highly reliable software for complex engineering applications.The OpportunityWorking alongside systems, electronics and hardware engineers, you'll develop robust embedded software for complex mission-critical systems. You'll contribute to the design of fault-tolerant software, hardware interfaces and core system functionality, ensuring reliable operation in demanding environments.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop and maintain embedded flight software for advanced engineering applications.Develop software architecture for mission-critical embedded systems.Develop software supporting command, telemetry and communications functions.Develop low-level software interfaces for embedded hardware and peripheral devices.Design robust boot processes, memory management and fault recovery functionality.Support software integration across complex hardware and software systems.Develop and maintain automated testing and continuous integration workflows.Perform software integration, verification and validation on engineering hardware.Produce clear technical documentation throughout the development lifecycle.Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.Essential ExperienceDegree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.Commercial experience developing embedded software within aerospace, defence, automotive, robotics, industrial automation or other safety-critical environments.Strong programming experience using C/C++ and Python.Experience developing software for embedded Linux and/or real-time operating systems.Strong understanding of embedded computer architecture, operating systems and memory management.Experience with embedded communication protocols such as CAN, UART, SPI, I²C or similar.Experience using Git and modern software development practices.Experience integrating, testing and debugging software on embedded hardware.Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and collaboration skills.Desirable ExperienceFlight or mission-critical software development.Experience with aerospace software frameworks or middleware.FPGA or embedded hardware integration.Bootloader or firmware development.Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), integration or environmental testing.Experience working within regulated engineering or safety-critical development environments.Why Apply?You'll join a collaborative engineering team where you'll have the opportunity to solve technically challenging problems, contribute to the development of cutting-edge embedded systems and work across the full software development lifecycle.The role offers genuine technical ownership, exposure to advanced technologies and the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers on projects with real-world impact, while developing your career within the growing space sector.Due to the confidential nature of this assignment, further information about the organisation will be shared during the recruitment process.If you're passionate about embedded software, solving complex engineering challenges and contributing to the future of the space industry, we'd love to hear from you.To find out more or apply in confidence, please contact:Angela OlmoNewSpace Technical📧 angela.olmo@newspacetechnical.com
