Outdoor activities abound through award-winning spaces, including an 18-mile paved walking and biking Greenbelt trail that encircles the city and passes through the UWG campus.The city embraces the University's students, faculty, and staff, and welcomes the diversity UWG brings to the community.Invested in education with highly rated city and county K-12 systems, both city and county public school graduation rates are 90% and above and rank among the top in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.Job SummaryThe Graduate Teaching Assistant is assigned to labs and orientations in the Fall and Spring semesters for Math and Reading Clinic Lab courses for Elementary Pre-service Teachers per course sections.Primary Duties IncludeAssisting Faculty in Laboratory Instruction (50%)Working alongside faculty conducting Math and Reading Labs in the COE Community Clinic, the Level 1 Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA1) will work with faculty through all stages of the Math and Reading Lab preparation and assignments, including attending lab sessions and observing pre-service elementary teachers in the Bachelor in Elementary Education program and their interaction with teaching and learning in the Mathematics and Reading Clinic. The GTA1 will assist the instructors of record for ECED 4251 and READ 4251 with the delivery of ECED and READ course content relevant to the lab component of each course, redeliver course content as needed, will be involved with course and lab material preparation and coordination with the Community Clinic, offer students guidance during lab sessions with resources, material, and course content, and will follow safety protocols for receiving and dismissing students. The GTA1 will coach students, providing resource assistance and feedback, as they develop curriculum throughout the semester for their weekly tutoring sessions. The GTA1 will remain current with the progression of the course. The GTA1 will compose detailed field notes on a weekly basis to provide feedback on each of the client/student interactions; these will be discussed with the instructor and made available to students enrolled in READ 4251 and ECED 4251.The GTA1 will also assist with data analysis of the pre- and post-assessments of students¿ Math and Reading performances and review prepared lesson plans accordingly. Grading and Assessment of Students (30%).The GTA1 will meet with the instructor of record for training each week on how to lead the lab component of the course. The GTA1 will provide general instructional support for ECED 4251 and READ 4251 including holding office hours. The GTA1 will work with faculty to pair and prepare students for working in the Math and Reading labs. The GTA1 will attend the weekly lab sessions to observe, review, assess, and provide feedback for the improvement of pre-service teachers¿ teaching and learning. The GTA1 will work with faculty giving input, grade assignments, quizzes, and exams. However, course grades will be finalized and posted by the faculty/instructor of record on BanWeb for all sections of the Math and Reading Labs.Provide Support (20%)The GTA1 will assist with modeling professional and appropriate teacher-student exchanges in the learning environment, tutoring, and office hours for students seeking clarification. The GTA1 will work with faculty to provide one-on-one additional support to pre-service teachers seeking additional support in the lab, including clarification and guidance. The GTA1 will further develop the resource materials list and make it available to faculty, students, and other clinic personnel; ensuring that all materials are in alignment with current Georgia Standards and represent best practices for teaching and learning.Required QualificationsTo be considered for a graduate assistantship at the University of West Georgia (UWG), students must meet the following criteria:Be fully admitted to a graduate degree program at UWG. Please note: Students admitted provisionally are not eligible for assistantship positions.Hold a Bachelor¿s degree from an accredited institution.Be enrolled full-time in a UWG graduate program during the assistantship period.Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all previous and current graduate coursework and remain in good academic standing.Meet eligibility requirements for employment in the United States.Bachelor's or Master's degree in early childhood education, elementary education, or secondary mathematics educationPreferred QualificationsEnrolled as a graduate student in the Department of Early Childhood through Secondary Education and Reading.Graduate from the Department of Early Childhood through Secondary Education and Reading.Holds a valid teaching certificate.Proposed SalaryA monthly stipend of $1,000.00 per month A tuition waiver, reducing your semester rate to $25 plus mandatory fees as long as you are employed in your assistantship.
