Library Specialist I-III

The Chesapeake Public Library ( CPL ) is seeking an energetic, service-oriented Library Specialist to support reference, readers' advisory, and public service operations at the Dr. Clarence V. Cuffee Library. CPL offers a collaborative, respectful work environment and plays a vital role in supporting lifelong learning and community connection. We're looking for someone who excels at customer service, stays organized, and enjoys helping others navigate library resources. Key Responsibilities:Provide reference and readers' advisory assistance across all service areas.Train and supervise assigned staff and volunteers.Assist patrons and staff with library technology, materials, and equipment.Maintain and organize the library's collection and related resources.Support daily library operations, including opening/closing, financial transactions, and customer accounts.Troubleshoot computers and equipment.Plan and present programs, events, and workshops; create related promotional materials.Compile statistics and support reporting needs.Maintain supplies, reference forms, bulletin boards, and mail distribution.Assist with and lead in-house programs, orientations, one-on-one technology help sessions, and Innovation Studio activities involving digital media, photography, videography, editing, and creative production tools; experience with related technology is preferred.Assist with programs and activities related to the community gardens and seed library, including basic garden maintenance, sustainable practices, and patron engagement with gardening and seed-saving resources; an interest in gardening or environmental education is preferred.Participate in off-site outreach visits and community partner programs, including both indoor and outdoor events.Ensure coverage across public service desks.Perform other duties as assigned. Library Specialist II:Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in library science, business (for positions in Acquisitions), or a closely related field. Library Specialist III : Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : Library Specialist I: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience, including some supervisory experience. Library Specialist II: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of related, full-time equivalent experience including some supervisory experience. Library Specialist III : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent library experience or similar corporate retail or business experience including some supervisory experience. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Requires a Driver's License and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards are required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Preferred QualificationsExperience with Automated circulation systems highly desired.Public library related experience desired.It is preferred that the Experience Requirements stated above are related and timely (within the last five years) with some supervisory experience.
