Aquatic Center - Lifeguard
Lifeguard Position Responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive experience of all guests in and around the aquatic facility. This position is a front-line, safety-focused role that requires strong attention to detail, quick decision-making, and a high level of professionalism at all times. Lifeguards are expected to remain vigilant, enforce facility rules fairly and consistently, respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, and represent the City of Republic in a positive and professional manner. Under the general direction of the Parks and Recreation Director and the direct supervision of the Head Guards, Aquatic Park Supervisors, and Aquatics Administrator. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Maintains an alert, attentive, and vigilant position at all times while on duty. Provides emergency care and treatment as required until emergency medical services arrive. Enforces all facility rules and prohibits unsafe activities to ensure patron safety. Presents a professional appearance and attitude, maintaining a high standard of customer service. Interacts effectively and courteously with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public. Performs routine cleaning and maintenance duties to support a clean and safe facility. Avoids unnecessary talking or visiting with patrons to remain focused on surveillance. Participates in regular in-service trainings and skill development sessions to maintain proficiency. Maintains appropriate supplies and equipment in assigned areas. Does not leave the pool area or assigned station until properly relieved or until all patrons have exited the water. Consults supervisors or managers when patrons refuse to obey rules or when additional support is needed. Reports to work regardless of weather conditions unless notified otherwise by management. Arrives on time and follows proper protocols when unable to attend a scheduled shift. Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the general public. Performs other duties as assigned. Important Duties Attends all training sessions as deemed appropriate by the supervisor or department head. Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area. Maintains neat and orderly work area. Minimum Qualifications Prior experience working in a related position is preferred. Knowledge, skills, and abilities include being a strong swimmer, able to command respect on the job, alert, and possess a keen sense of anticipation. Must remain polite and courteous while maintaining strict adherence to pool rules and regulations; Must be a self-starter who possesses initiative and urgency in their work; Must be able to effectively communicate through written and verbal skills; Must have good time management skills; Must have good cognitive and analytical skills; Must be able to handle stressful situations; Must be able to quickly assess or judge situations; Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility; Must have a working knowledge in the basic skills of operating computers; Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility. Overall professionalism displaying the utmost integrity, discretion, courtesy, cooperation, discipline, and behavior. Special Requirements Must be at least 15 years old to apply. Must possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate and be certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer. All certifications must remain valid throughout the entire season. Physical Demands Performs bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead; Must be able to reach, grip and hold; Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry 60 pounds. Work Environment Mostly in an outdoor working environment with exposure to dust and pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical and mechanical hazards associated with equipment, extreme noise; Subject to variety of extreme weather condition; Susceptible to safety hazards associated with working in and around high traffic volume; May work in confined places and awkward positions. Miscellaneous Requirements Will be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Subject to emergency call-in. Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force. May be subject to random substance abuse testing. Formal application, rating of education and experience, oral interview, reference check and job-related tests may be required.
