AI & Machine Learning Intern – Operations Matson, Inc. Position at Matson Navigation Company, Inc. The role is within the Operations Finance team and focuses on improving operational performance through data-driven machine learning and automation. About The Role As an AI & Machine Learning Intern, you will apply machine learning and automation techniques to operational datasets, supporting predictive analysis and workflow optimization across the network. This position requires on-site work at our Walnut Creek corporate office at least three days per week. What You'll Do Identify manual operational tasks and explore automation opportunities Build and test models to classify and analyze structured business data Analyze operational performance data to identify efficiency patterns Work with planning and scheduling data to explore forecasting approaches Review operational metrics to detect bottlenecks or variability Present clear, data-driven insights to internal stakeholders Develop lightweight prototypes that reduce manual effort and can scale over time Translate analytical models into practical solutions that support real-world decision-making You Have These Skills Proficiency in Python Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Experience with common data and machine learning libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) Understanding of core machine learning concepts, including regression, classification, model evaluation, time series forecasting, and anomaly detection Self-motivated and comfortable working in evolving or ambiguous problem environments Interest in applying machine learning to operational and business use cases And These Qualifications Pursuing a bachelor's degree in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field Prior completion of basic accounting/tax courses required Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher Extra Credit If You Have Practical experience with machine learning or AI projects GitHub, portfolio, or project examples demonstrating applied machine learning work The hourly rate is posted for this position in California.
