Position Type:Student Support Services/Guidance CounselorDate Posted:4/7/2026Location:Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park High School(High-Needs School)Date Available:08/01/2024Closing Date:05/31/2024Summary of the Position:The focus of this position will be working with students in our middle school, high school by supporting and working with students to assure that they complete all necessary paperwork to further their education and/or career aspirations after high school. This position will also focus on making sure students follow through on career and college opportunities after graduation.The College Councelor mission is to prepare and help students apply for college, vocational training, or military service. The advisor works to ensure every student has the opportunity to access and succeed in postsecondary education or career pathways. The advisor will help students/parents submit FAFSA applications, provide support to students/parents for post-secondary educational and career experiences. Special focus must be placed on low-income students, first-generation college going students, minority, and special population students.The College Counselor will also serve as the student's academic counselor. Creating and maintaing schedules for students with other administrators.Job Responsibilities Include:Data collection on services and logging of time.Attend all scheduled meetings.Schedule and facilitate access for military recruiters and college admission representative visits.College Application Week (plan and meet goals).College Visits and College/Career Fairs.Assist students with completion of college and vocational applications and scholarships.Internships/Externships.FAFSA Nights (2-3) Plan, schedule, prepare, and invite parents/students to begin and complete applications.Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) (plan, prepare, document meetings with individual students and parents to educate all on the TIP program).College entrance test preparation (Federal, State, and Local) and family support.Provide classroom college and career informational learning experiences.Career/College Signing Day (plan, prepare, and oversee).Coordinating and assisting with post-secondary celebrations and other high school academic events (Freshmen Orientation, Meet the Teachers, Parent Teacher Conferences, Graduation).Coordinating efforts to prevent summer melt.Provide information for college and careers through various outlets (Facebook, Instagram, Email, School Signs, All-Calls).Job Qualifications:A caring individual with knowledge of the college application process, FAFSA, and career opportunities for a diverse population of students.Experience working with at-risk students is preferred.Able to work as part of a team.Possess the ability to connect with students grades 7-12.Be driven to build new programs from the ground up and help our students succeed with their individual post-secondary plans.Experience in interpreting data and making data based decisions.Ability to plan and expedite work projects on time.Ability to communicate well with others verbally and in writing.Experience with Microsoft Excel and Google programs (Docs, Sheets, Forms)Must satisfactorily pass:Law enforcement background checkPersonal and professional background check.Receive a satisfactory response to a P.A. 189 letter (misconduct law).
