IoT Platform Engineer (AWS) – ContractEngagement Type: Contract (1–3 months, potential extension) Location: Remote (U.S. time zones) Start: ASAP Reports To: IT / Platform Engineering$65/hour 1099Role OverviewSeeking a hands-on IoT Platform Engineer with deep AWS expertise to take ownership of an existing, production IoT platform deployed across multiple customer locations. This role focuses on stabilization, operational excellence, technical debt reduction, documentation, and knowledge transfer rather than greenfield development.The ideal candidate brings strong experience supporting live, customer-facing systems, improving reliability, and implementing cloud best practices, observability, and Infrastructure as Code to enable long-term maintainability.Key ResponsibilitiesPlatform Stabilization & SupportOwn day-to-day operations of a production AWS IoT platformTroubleshoot and resolve issues across ingestion, processing, visualization, and alerting layersIdentify reliability gaps, performance bottlenecks, and technical debtImplement pragmatic improvements to increase stability and scalabilityDocumentation & Knowledge TransferDocument provisioning workflows for devices and equipmentCapture IoT Core onboarding, SiteWise asset modeling, and data flowsProduce Grafana dashboard documentation and data source mappingCreate architecture diagrams, operational runbooks, and support guidesProvisioning & Configuration StandardizationReview and streamline provisioning/deployment processesStandardize configurations across environmentsImplement or improve Infrastructure as Code practices (Terraform/CloudFormation)Cloud Operations & SecurityAudit and optimize IAM roles and permissionsStrengthen logging, monitoring, and alertingEnhance platform observability and operational resilienceApply AWS cloud security best practicesStakeholder CollaborationPartner with engineering and operations teamsProvide regular status updates and risk assessmentsDeliver a comprehensive handoff enabling internal team ownershipRequired Qualifications5+ years of AWS cloud engineering experienceHands-on production experience with AWS IoT Core and AWS IoT SiteWiseExperience supporting live, customer-facing platformsAWS Lambda development using Python or Node.jsStrong understanding of IoT data pipelines and distributed cloud architecturesExperience with monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident resolutionStrong technical documentation and communication skillsPreferred QualificationsExperience with Amazon Managed GrafanaBackground in industrial, manufacturing, or facilities IoT environmentsExperience stabilizing or taking over existing platformsInfrastructure as Code using Terraform or AWS CloudFormationExperience improving observability and operational maturityDeliverables & Success CriteriaProduction issues remediated or documented with clear action plansComplete provisioning, onboarding, and operational documentationStandardized device/equipment/site onboarding processesImproved monitoring, alerting, and system reliabilitySuccessful knowledge transfer enabling independent internal support
