Multilingual Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) The Opportunity Alliance is looking to fill a Multilingual Breastfeeding Peer Counselor role with our Women Infants and Children WIC) program. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children — better known as the WIC Program — serves to safeguard the health of low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding people, infants, and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating including breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals to health care. This Multilingual WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) provide culturally and linguistically appropriate lactation education and ongoing support to WIC participants who plan to feed and are feeding infants with human milk. BFPCs stay within their scope of practice to build trusted relationships with WIC families, while ensuring compliance with performance standards and contractual obligations. Schedule: Part-time, 12 hours per week Location: Portland, ME Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Preference given to those who have been or are a current participant in the WIC Program. Has breastfed / chestfed at least one baby. In addition to English, fluency in at least one additional language, spoken and written. Preferred: French, Lingala, Portuguese, and Spanish. Is enthusiastic about lactation and wants to help other parents in their breastfeeding and/or chest feeding experience. Experience in computer programs and data entry. Ability to quickly establish trust and respect with participants, and co-workers. Reliable transportation. Willing to travel (no more that 10% of time). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment Ability to maintain positive relationships with community partners. Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background, child protective service check & sex offender check. Must not be on the state or federal suspension and disbarment list. Must be able to exert moderate physical effort with occasional standing, walking, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, typing and frequently lift and carry small children or material weighing up to 25 pounds. Driving may be necessary to attend meetings and training courses but is not a primarily and essential job responsibility.
