Protect & Preserve Hawaiʻi (PPH) Education & Outreach Coordinator (ʻĀina Educator) Field-Based Role Location: Oʻahu, including Pia Valley and community sites Position Type: Full-time Role SummaryThe Education & Outreach Coordinator supports PPH’s field programs by engaging volunteers, sharing our story, and helping grow community connection to our work. This is a hands-on, field-based role that works closely with the Conservation Lead, who oversees restoration activities and leads field operations.This position focuses on creating meaningful volunteer experiences, supporting youth and community education, capturing and sharing content, and representing PPH at public-facing outreach and education events. The right person is energetic, people-oriented, culturally respectful, and passionate about conservation in Hawaiʻi.This role requires a willingness to learn, practice, and responsibly share place-based knowledge connected to Hawaiʻi’s ecology, history, culture, and stewardship values. A background in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian language, ʻāina-based education, cultural practice, or related experience is preferred, but not required. Core ResponsibilitiesField & Volunteer EngagementCo-lead weekly volunteer workdays alongside the Conservation Lead, primarily Saturdays and other scheduled volunteer daysEngage, welcome, and guide volunteers in a positive, inclusive, and respectful waySupport safety, organization, and overall flow of volunteer eventsHelp create a strong, memorable experience for volunteers, participants, and community membersSupport a team-first environment and assist where needed during field-based activities Education, Schools & Community GroupsShare PPH’s mission, restoration efforts, and ʻike in an accessible and engaging waySupport and facilitate programming with schools, youth participants, community groups, and partner organizationsAssist with field-based education, guided experiences, and place-based learning activitiesHelp participants understand the connection between conservation, culture, community, and kuleanaSupport appropriate cultural protocol, including willingness to learn oli or other place-based practices as guided by PPH and community partners Public-Facing Outreach & Education EventsHelp lead and represent PPH at outreach events, education events, guided hikes, volunteer exchange programs, and community gatheringsServe as a welcoming and professional point of contact for participants, schools, partners, and community groupsCommunicate PPH’s work clearly, authentically, and positively to diverse audiencesBuild relationships that help strengthen PPH’s community presence and mission impact Content & StorytellingCapture photos and videos during events, fieldwork, school programs, and outreach activitiesSupport social media content and storytelling to highlight PPH’s work, volunteers, partners, and impactHelp grow visibility and community engagement through authentic, mission-aligned communicationAssist with captions, event recaps, outreach materials, and other public-facing communications as needed Team Support & OperationsAssist with event preparation, logistics, setup, breakdown, and follow-upSupport across operations as needed in a small nonprofit environmentStay organized with tasks, deadlines, communication, and Asana updatesCommunicate proactively when support, clarification, or follow-up is neededContribute to a collaborative team culture where everyone helps within their role and capacity What Matters MostPassion for conservation and PPH’s missionStrong people skills and ability to engage diverse groupsWarm, welcoming, and confident presence in public-facing settingsEnjoys working with youth and is comfortable leading and interacting with school groupsComfortable working with community groups, volunteers, partners, and the publicCultural humility and willingness to learn, practice, and responsibly share place-based knowledgeComfortable working outdoors in physical conditionsReliable, communicative, and proactivePositive energy and willingness to take initiativeWillingness to contribute across all aspects of a small nonprofit team QualificationsPreferred, Not RequiredBackground, coursework, or experience in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian language, ʻāina-based education, Indigenous studies, cultural practice, cultural resource management, environmental education, sustainability, communications, or related fieldsExperience working with schools, youth, community groups, volunteers, or public education programsExperience with public speaking, outreach, facilitation, teaching, or community engagementBasic experience with social media, photography, video, or content creation Additional RequirementsMust currently live on Oʻahu and be able to attend in-person work, meetings, and eventsAbility to work weekends, especially scheduled Saturday volunteer eventsAbility to support Monday volunteer workdays or other scheduled programs as neededValid Hawaiʻi driver’s license and reliable transportationRespect for Hawaiʻi’s people, places, history, and cultureWillingness to learn through a community-centered, place-based approach Closing NoteThis role is for someone who wants to be part of building something meaningful.
