Our Cadre5 Lab Partners division has partnered with the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to recruit a qualified Cloud Engineer for the American Science Cloud (AmSC) initiative.
AmSC is a first-of-its-kind, federally funded cloud infrastructure and API platform designed to accelerate AI model development, data sharing, and large-scale computational science across the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). ORNL is a premier research institution delivering breakthroughs in energy, national security, and advanced computing.

This premier research institution located near Knoxville in Oak Ridge, TN, addresses national needs through impactful research and world-leading research centers.

This is a full-time, permanent position that can telecommute. Occasional travel to the Oak Ridge facility may be required.

Role Overview
As a Cloud Engineer for the American Science Cloud (AmSC) platform your role will be to support the L2 Infrastructure Services team by designing, building, and maintaining multi-cloud infrastructure. The focus is on infrastructure architecture, provisioning, scalability, monitoring, and reliability, enabling scientific workloads and platform services across development, staging, and production environments.
Job Responsibilities
Design, provision, and manage cloud infrastructure across multi-cloud environments
Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform
Support Kubernetes cluster provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management
Configure and manage cloud networking, storage, and compute resources
Implement cloud security controls in collaboration with cybersecurity teams and DevSecOps
Support integration of distributed scientific systems and data platforms
Provide operational and engineering support for production applications and development teams.
Configure instrumentation and observability for infrastructure and core services
Diagnose and resolve infrastructure performance and operational issues
Collaborate with DevOps and application teams to support deployment requirements
Participate in on-call rotation supporting production systems
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field
Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Cloud Engineer and/or DevOps Cloud Engineer
Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance is required. This requires US Citizenship.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in multi-cloud or hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Strong knowledge of cloud architecture patterns and managed services for AWS
Solid understanding of cloud networking concepts and system design
Thorough understanding of cloud security topics and mitigation solutions.
Experience managing or working with AWS Organizations
Working knowledge of Unix/Linux systems and networking protocols
Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or OpenTofu)
Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or Nagios
Ability to identify and resolve performance issues and system bottlenecks
Experience defining and implementing scalable infrastructure solutions
Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Previous team lead experience is a plus
