Religion Teacher

The Religion Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous, and student-centered instruction in religion courses, while supporting the academic and social-emotional development of students in alignment with the mission and Episcopal identity of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. Supports the development of students’ critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and understanding of diverse religious traditions through courses grounded in the values and traditions of the Episcopal Church.Essential DutiesTeaching and Instruction Deliver high-quality instruction in religion courses, which may include 6th grade religion, 8th grade world religions, and Upper School religion electives. Design and implement engaging, challenging, and culturally responsive lessons and assessments that promote critical thinking, reflection, and meaningful dialogue. Teach religion courses through the lens of St. Margaret’s Episcopal identity, fostering an understanding of faith, ethics, and global religious traditions. Facilitate student engagement with essential questions related to belief, identity, morality, and human experience. Use a variety of instructional strategies to support inquiry-based learning and student participation. Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students. Maintain a structured, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment that encourages student voice and thoughtful discussion.Student Support and Engagement Foster a supportive classroom climate that promotes student voice, respect, and academic growth. Support a range of learners, including students who may require additional reinforcement in foundational math skills. Serve as a grade-level advisor, supporting students’ academic and social-emotional development. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents. Maintain open, consistent communication with families and colleagues.Professional Responsibilities Engage in division meetings, school events, professional development, and committee work. Stay current on best practices in religious studies, pedagogy, and curriculum development. Collaborate with colleagues across divisions to support student learning and advance strategic initiatives. Collaborate with school chaplains on curriculum design, program development, and best pedagogical practices in religious education. Partner with teaching faculty and leadership to align religion curriculum with broader school initiatives and mission-centered programming. Contribute to the broader life of the school, which may include supporting student clubs, enrichment opportunities, or summer programming. Uphold the mission and core values of the school in all professional interactions. Perform other related duties as required.QualificationsRequired Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies, Theology, History, or a related field. 3+ years of full-time classroom teaching experience. Strong understanding of best practices in teaching religion and/or humanities courses. Demonstrated ability to facilitate discussion-based and inquiry-driven learning. Comfort with educational technology and innovative teaching practices. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a team-based environment.Preferred Master’s degree in Religious Studies, Theology, or related field. Clear California Single Subject Teaching Credential. Experience teaching grades 6–12. Experience teaching world religions or ethics-based courses. Experience collaborating with chaplaincy or faith-based programming. Experience in independent schools.Compensation And Benefits Salary Range: $73,000 - $87,000 Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, Short and Long-Term Disability, and Life Insurance Paid Time Off: 10 Faculty wellness days Retirement: 403(b) Retirement Plan with employer contribution Additional: Tuition Remission, Salary Continuance Plan, Wee Tartan Childcare Center (upon availability)Physical Requirements And EnvironmentThe Religion Teacher works in a dynamic classroom environment requiring frequent standing, walking, and active engagement with students throughout the school day. The role includes movement across campus and participation in school activities and events. The position requires the ability to lift instructional materials up to 25 pounds and to effectively use classroom technology and equipment.
