Mechanic Heavy Duty

Job Title: Heavy Duty Mechanic Location: Navajo Mine Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor Department: Maintenance Description: Must take a personal and active approach to health, safety and environment and understand and follow all state, federal and company health, safety and environmental requirements applicable to the work area and tasks assigned. Position Summary: The Heavy Duty Mechanic will diagnose malfunctions and repair, replace and inspect parts on all types of large surface mining equipment including dozers, motor graders, end dump haul trucks, coal haul trucks, large front-end loaders, overburden drills, draglines, and Caterpillar and Cummins engines. Essential Duties: Perform safety inspections of work areas and equipment prior to commencing work, report and correct (as appropriate) hazardous conditions and report all near misses and accidents to the supervisor. Act responsibly in all duties, follow all safety instructions and established policies and procedures. Lift, carry, move, and utilize a variety of tools, equipment, parts and supplies such as batteries, hydraulic lifts, and toolboxes. Use hoists and other assisting devices whenever possible and have the ability to lift, carry, climb, work at heights and work in confined spaces. Operate various types of vehicles including, but not limited to, pickups and field service trucks, forklifts, hydraulic cranes, heavy equipment, lube and fuel trucks, and basket trucks as qualified. Job duties must be performed in accordance with MSHA laws and regulations, established company safety procedures and State and Federal environmental regulations. Qualifications: 2 years of experience with heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment or surface mining equipment required. Proven previous maintenance experience with hydraulics, air conditioning systems, 24v electrical systems, overburden drills and draglines preferred, experience with Caterpillar equipment and engines, and Cummins engines a plus. High School Diploma/GED, required. Two-year diesel related technical degree, or completion of an apprenticeship or a vocational program in a related field preferred. Tier 5 mechanic preferred. Possess a valid State Driver’s License and maintain an insurable driving record. Possess a positive safety attitude, be willing and able to work shift work with varying schedules and hours, work in inclement weather conditions and work overtime on short notice as needed. Applicant must provide written letters of recommendations from their past two supervisors, who are willing to confirm their recommendations and attest to applicant’s self-motivation, positive safety attitude, ability to act independently, make sound decisions, and work well with others. If Applicant is a past or current employee or contractor, their personnel file and evaluations will be considered. Employees with poor performance records, verbal warnings, and disciplinary actions that were not satisfactorily resolved or whose file demonstrates a failure to meet qualifications will not be considered. Any offer of employment is conditioned on the passing of a background check, drug test, physical capacity assessment, submission of a chest x-ray and spirometry examination as required by MSHA’s dust regulation, and verification of eligibility to work in the United States. Any offer of employment is contingent on new hires becoming a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers (“IUOE”) Local 953 within 31 days from start date as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Failure to become a member within the required timeframe will result in termination of employment.
