About the Program The Basic Manufacturing Certificate Program is an 80-hour, noncredit workforce training program offered through SCC’s Workforce Training & Continuing Education division. It is designed to provide foundational technical, safety, and soft skills for entry-level work in modern manufacturing environments in Eastern Washington. The program consists of seven focused modules (plus additional workplace skills and employer visit components) and includes hands-on training in a modern lab/shop setting. Graduates are prepared for roles such as production operator, machine operator, quality control technician, or maintenance support, and may have pathways to further credentials in SCC’s Machining, Welding, Robotics or other programs. Position Summary Under the direction of the Workforce & Continuing Education Department, the Adjunct Instructor will deliver both classroom and lab instruction for the Basic Manufacturing Certificate Program. The instructor will develop and deliver engaging instruction covering safety, manufacturing tools and equipment, blueprint reading, manufacturing processes, quality & inspection, manufacturing math, and workplace professionalism. The instructor will ensure students gain the technical knowledge, hands-on skills, and workplace readiness required to enter the manufacturing workforce. Duties and Responsibilities Plan, prepare and deliver quality instructional sessions across the program modules, including both lecture and lab/shop components. Facilitate hands-on activities and demonstrations in lab/shop settings, ensuring proper safety protocols. Integrate workplace skills (communication, teamwork, time management, resume/interview preparation) into modules. Evaluate student progress via practical performance, quizzes/assessments, and class participation. Maintain student records (attendance, assessment results, completion status) in alignment with Spokane Colleges’ policy. Collaborate with local manufacturing industry partners and workforce organizations to align curriculum with regional employer needs. Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom/lab environment, responding to diverse adult learners’ needs. Participate in program review and continuous improvement activities as requested by the department. Participate in district, division, department, or general faculty meetings; in-service training; curriculum development; academic consulting; workshops or seminars; service on district or college councils or committees, or other activities with the scope of the position. Comply with district policy, procedures and directives, state and federal regulations, orders and statute and collective bargaining agreements. Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follows established procedures in areas such as printing, turning in grades, bookstore orders, office support, safety and health issues and related administrative processes. Support and advance the Spokane Colleges strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Minimum five (5) years of recent and relevant industry experience in manufacturing, machining, industrial maintenance, production operations, quality control or similar. Demonstrated working knowledge of manufacturing tools and equipment, measurement instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges), basic machine tool exposure, and preventive maintenance concepts. Understanding of workplace safety standards: OSHA, hazard communication, PPE, lock-out/tag-out, fire safety, emergency response. Ability to interpret and teach basic blueprint reading and technical drawings (line types, symbols, tolerances). Competency in manufacturing process fundamentals (machining, forming, joining, additive manufacturing, material flow) and manufacturing math (fractions, decimals, conversions, tolerances). Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to engage adult learners in both classroom and lab/shop environments. Commitment to workforce training and the mission of Spokane Community College and Spokane Colleges in preparing students for regional manufacturing careers. Preferred Qualifications Associate degree or higher in Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Technology, Machining, Welding, Engineering Technology or related field. Prior experience teaching/training in a technical or adult education environment or industry apprenticeship program. Familiarity with modern manufacturing trends such as Industry 4.0, lean manufacturing, automation. Quality system experience (e.g., SPC, root cause analysis) and use of inspection tools. Experience working with manufacturing sectors in Eastern Washington (e.g., aerospace, med-bio, food processing). Bilingual (English/Spanish) or additional language skills beneficial. Working Conditions & Environment Instruction will take place in classrooms, labs and manufacturing workshops; exposure to tools, small machine equipment, power tools and measurement instruments may occur. Some lifting (up to ~25 lbs) and movement around equipment and shop environment required. Evening and/or daytime hours, some weekends are required depending on teaching schedule chosen. Adjunct faculty assignments are for each class/session; payment is per contact hour according to schedule. CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. Membership is optional. A scheduled ride-along will be conducted. You must be willing to audit the lecture class prior to teaching to demonstrate skills that are required to teach. CONDITIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT: Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the U.S. This is an absolute condition of employment.
