POSITION TITLE: Athletic TrainerEXEMPTION STATUS: ExemptREPORTS TO: Executive Director of AthleticsTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As assigned per contract, 2026-2027 school yearPrimary PurposePlan, coordinate and supervise all components of athletic training program for student athletes. Under the direction of a physician, carry out activities in the areas of: prevention, evaluation, emergency treatment, physical reconditioning, and rehabilitation of injuries.QualificationsEducation/CertificationBachelor's DegreeValid Texas Teaching Certificate, preferredValid license from Texas Advisory Board of Athletic TrainersNational Athletic Trainers Association Certification, preferredSpecial Knowledge/SkillsAbility to diagnose athletic injuriesAbility to provide injury prevention and rehabilitation servicesAbility to provide emergency careKnowledge of therapeutic modalities and ability to apply appropriate treatment to athletic injuriesAbility to instruct and supervise student athletes and student trainersStrong organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skillsExperienceTwo years' experience as an athletic trainerMajor Responsibilities and DutiesProgram ManagementPlan and implement a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program for student athletes.Respond to emergencies and make quick, independent judgments about injuries.Identify acute injuries and provide first-aid triage including assessing injuries and deciding whether an athlete should seek further medical attention and should discontinue participation in the athletic event.Maintain accurate records of all injuries and the treatment of all injuries for student athletes.Works closely with community physicians and hospitals in scheduling appointments for injured athletes.Organize and implement the procedure for athletic physicals.Promptly and accurately gather all paperwork on athletes, such as physicals and emergency cards.Provide basic instruction to campus athletic staff members in the prevention and care of athletic injuries.Enforce team and district rules firmly, consistently, and fairly in the area of student behavior.Utilize appropriate procedures for approval of all expenditures and work closely with the athletics department in the budget process.Rehabilitation and ReconditioningDevelop and supervise appropriate rehabilitation programs for athletes under the direction of a physician.Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes, develop progression criteria and return to activity.CommunicationEstablish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical staff, coaches and others.Assume responsibility for working with and developing the proper relationship with team physicians, coaches, athletes, and families of injured athletes.Keeps athletics department and coaching staff informed of injuries requiring surgery.Contribute toward the development of a strong, positive attitude among student trainers and athletes toward the training facilities and the training staff.Articulate the district's mission and goals to the community and solicit community support.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesSelect, train and supervise student assistant trainers and schedule student trainers for athletic contests and practices.Regularly review the eligibility of student trainers, take appropriate action for ineligible students, and support school efforts to remediate the student.Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental FactorsTools/Equipment Used: Athletic equipment, standard office equipment including computer, peripherals, and other instructional equipment; automated external defibrillator (AED); school vehiclePosture: Prolonged standing; kneeling, squatting, bending, stooping; grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and reachingMotion: Frequent walking and physical movements associated with sportsLifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistanceEnvironment: Work inside and outside with exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather; frequent exposure to noise; frequent in-district and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; moderate exposure to vehicle fumes and work around moving vehiclesMental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress, work with frequent interruptions
