Work Location: 50 Medical Park Drive, Birmingham, AL (UAB St. Vincent's East)
Assignment Duration: 3+ Months
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM - 7:30 PM
Position Summary:
Responsibilities are interchangeable among Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist roles. The specific work environment/department will be outlined in the requirement.
The role involves determining specimen acceptability and performing both routine and complex laboratory procedures in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
Background & Context:
FMLA and short-staff coverage within the Microbiology Lab.
Key Responsibilities:
Determine specimen acceptability based on established criteria
Perform routine and complex lab procedures per SOPs
Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot lab instrumentation
Make technical decisions and resolve testing issues
Prepare, test, and evaluate reagents and controls
Report accurate and timely test results
Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control
Maintain inventory of testing supplies
Assist with specimen processing as needed
Ensure a safe work environment and proper use of PPE
Handle sample processing, testing, setup, maintenance, documentation, and QC
Perform microbiology-specific tasks (reading plates, susceptibilities, general lab work)
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or equivalent (as per CLIA/state requirements)
2-4 years of clinical laboratory testing experience required
State Medical Technologist license (if required per state)
ASCP or AMT certification (preferred/required as per role)
Microbiology experience required
Strong attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and in a team environment
Proficiency with computers; experience with laboratory information systems is a plus
Must pass a standardized color vision screening
Flexibility to work overtime or alternate shifts as needed
