Electrical Design Engineer

OverviewWe are seeking a highly capable Electrical Design Engineer and Project Manager who is comfortable working directly in the details of design and production.This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving technical problems, performing detailed analysis, and providing clear direction to engineers and drafting staff. The successful candidate will manage projects independently from kickoff through construction while also leading and supporting a small remote production team.The role requires strong ownership of both technical design and client relationships. This is not a review-only or oversight position. The candidate must be willing and able to actively participate in calculations, markups, coordination, and production support.Projects include hospitals, institutional, municipal, and commercial facilities. Work will be performed within Columbia Engineering Group's project management framework.The candidate will report to the MEP+FP Department Manager.Unless on site for project-related work, the position is fully remote.Core ExpectationsThe successful candidate will:Take full ownership of projects from inception to closeoutPerform detailed technical analysis and provide clear, actionable markupsLead and mentor a small remote engineering and drafting teamManage client communication and coordination independentlyRemain actively engaged in design production rather than functioning solely as a reviewerKey ResponsibilitiesElectrical Design & AnalysisDevelop electrical design solutions for renovations and new construction projects, including:Power distribution systemsLighting systemsFire alarm systemsLow voltage systemsPerform detailed calculations, including:Load calculationsVoltage drop analysisEquipment sizing and selectionPrepare and review construction documents and provide clear, detailed markups for production staffUtilize Bluebeam to coordinate design changes and communicate direction to drafting staffModel electrical systems using software such as:SKMAGI32Write and edit electrical specificationsDevelop basis-of-design documentationPrepare construction cost estimatesProject ManagementManage electrical design projects from kickoff through construction completionDevelop project scopes, budgets, and schedulesCoordinate with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplinesTrack project progress and maintain accountability for deliverablesIdentify risks, constraints, and design challenges earlyCode Compliance and Technical LeadershipEnsure designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including National Electrical Code (NEC) and Washington State Energy CodeConduct or oversee Arc flash studies and Protective device coordinationPrepare technical documentation and reports required for permitting and constructionTeam LeadershipManage and support a small remote engineering and drafting teamProvide clear direction and technical guidanceReview work for accuracy, constructability, and code complianceMentor junior engineers and production staffClient ManagementServe as the primary point of contact for assigned projectsCommunicate technical decisions clearly and professionallyManage expectations, schedules, and deliverablesBuild long-term relationships with clientsRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related fieldMinimum 5 years of experience in electrical design for commercial, institutional, or public-sector projectsDemonstrated ability to manage projects independentlyStrong proficiency in electrical design and analysisAbility to produce and review detailed technical workExperience coordinating with clients and multidisciplinary teamsStrong organizational and communication skillsPreferred QualificationsProfessional Engineer (PE) licenseExperience working with Washington State jurisdictionsExperience leading small teamsExperience with SKM, AGI32, and BluebeamWork RequirementsAbility to travel within Washington State for site visits and meetings as neededAbility to perform site verification and construction observationAbility to manage projects and teams in a remote work environmentAbility to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
