Nonprofit Accountant (MIP Fund Accounting) Nourish Colorado is a mission-driven nonprofit organization committed to strong financial stewardship, transparency, and accuracy. We are seeking an experienced Nonprofit Accountant with hands on MIP Fund Accounting experience to own day-to-day accounting and ensure a high standard of detail and accountability. This role requires deep attention to detail, strong nonprofit fund accounting knowledge, and the ability to work independently while collaborating with leadership. This position owns the accounting function; it is not a data entry or bookkeeping. The ideal candidate is comfortable with hands-on transactional accounting, thrives in a collaborative environment, and is eager to grow within a nonprofit finance team. This position is primarily remote and requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while collaborating effectively online with a distributed team. This Role Supports the Finance Team; this position is designed to manage core transactional and operational accounting functions, allowing the Deputy Executive Director to focus on strategic financial management, budgeting, leadership, and organizational planningwhile providing strong oversight and mentorship. Duties/ResponsibilitiesAccounting & Month End Close Own the monthly close process in MIP, including all reconciliations Prepare and review journal entries with appropriate fund, program, and grant coding Help to reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, payroll, AR, and AP Review fund balances and investigate variances proactively Ensure transactions are properly classified by fund, restriction, program, and grant Fund & Grant Accounting Maintain accurate restricted and unrestricted fund balances Track grant activity and ensure compliance with funder restrictions Prepare grant, program, and funder reports directly from MIP Monitor budgets and flag potential overspending or misclassifications Financial Reporting Prepare board ready monthly financial statements Produce financial reports for management, board, auditors, and funders Support annual audit preparation and serve as a primary audit liaison Ensure documentation and schedules are complete and well organized Systems Ownership (MIP) Maintain the MIP chart of accounts Ensure reporting logic and account structure are working as intended Document accounting procedures and internal controls Identify and correct historical or recurring errors Partner with leadership to improve accounting processes and controls Grants & Program Support Support the tracking of grant expenditures to ensure costs are allowable, allocable, and properly documented Assist with grant financial reporting and reimbursement requests Maintain grant schedules and supporting documentation Support budget-to-actual monitoring for grants and programs Internal Controls & Process Improvement Follow established accounting policies and internal control procedures Assist with documenting and improving accounting workflows Support implementation of nonprofit financial management best practices Collaboration & Support Work closely with program staff to ensure accurate expense coding Perform other accounting and finance-related duties as assigned Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in accounting 24 years of accounting experience using MIP Fund Accounting preferably in a government grant-funded environment Working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, GAAS Experience with accounts payable, reconciliations, and general ledger accounting Demonstrated experience with nonprofit fund accounting Experience owning month end close from start to finish Strong reconciliation skills and attention to detail Preferred QualificationsExperience with federal grants and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) Experience supporting audits or Single Audits Familiarity with nonprofit financial statements and functional expense allocation 4+ years of nonprofit accounting experience Experience cleaning up or inheriting an existing accounting system Experience with multisegmented charts of accounts (fund, grant, program) Prior in-house nonprofit accounting experience (not only outsourced work) Location & Work Arrangement:This role is primarily remote, with regular in-person engagement. Candidates should be based in the Denver metro area or able to attend in-person meetings. Nourish Colorado operates as a collaborative, mostly remote organization and values intentional in-person connection to support our mission and team culture. Reliable access to a secure remote workspace with consistent internet is required, along with availability during core business hours, participation in virtual meetings, and timely communication via email, chat, and video. Occasional in-person attendance for meetings, trainings, audits, or organizational events is expected, with advance notice provided. Benefits Salary: $75,000-80,000 plus a comprehensive benefit package including: health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, 401K match, flexible spending account, flexible PTO, and 13 holidays including your birthday.
