Craft Center Intermittent Instructor

NOTE: Specifically hiring instructors with expertise in surfboard shaping.Definition and PurposeUnder the supervision of the Coordinator I - Craft Center, Craft Center Intermittent Instructors teach craft classes in the ASI Craft Center in one or more of the following areas: ceramics (wheel throwing), ceramics (hand building), bike repair, block printing, fiber arts (crochet, knitting, embroidery, sewing, macrame), stained glass, jewelry making, leatherworking, surfboard shaping, or painting. The Instructor is responsible for developing class content, supervising class participants, and leading instructional sessions.ASI is committed to supporting the aspirations of the University Learning Objectives. Additionally they will work productively as individuals and in groups while communicating effectively.RequirementsEducational Requirements and Qualifying ExperienceMust have expertise in a particular craft within one or more of the Craft Center areas (painting, leatherworking, bike repair and maintenance, stained glass, jewelry making, ceramics, surfboard shaping, block printing, or fiber arts)Ability to be highly organized and have good planning skillsExcellent oral and written communication skillsFirst Aid and CPR Certification requiredAbility to work with diverse populations and those with special limitations or needsExtensive knowledge of classes being taughtUnderstanding of current trends in area of expertisePrevious experience in supervising and meeting participants in an instructional environmentSupervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervise class participantsLead instructional sessions/classesEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeach a minimum of two craft classes each quarter, while fulfilling class schedule requirementsKeep studio equipment in clean, useable working orderReport any needed changes or problems to the appropriate Craft Center staff memberProvide assistance to co-workers as needed to ensure that all have the necessary supplies and tools to run their classesRepair equipment, or report broken equipment to the appropriate Craft Center staff member if the repair is beyond the instructor's level of expertiseIn collaboration with other area instructors, assist in keeping an inventory of all area supplies and inform appropriate staff of any shortagesPropose area additions and/or improvements and provide additional information as neededPossess knowledge of the raw materials used in each class into plan for supply reorderingPlay an active role in maintaining class minimum enrollmentsCommunicate with appropriate staff regarding any issues pertaining to each craft area, classes, or the Craft CenterMaintain familiarity with evacuation plan for work areaAttend all mandatory meetings, workshops, and retreatsAwareness of safety concerns and risk managementAwareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversityMaintain prompt hours and follow absence proceduresMaintain a working relationship with staff and co-workersAdhere to and enforce all ASI departmental policies and proceduresCommitment to student development and leadershipDevelop individual lesson plansOther Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in ASI policy as a condition of their employment.Other duties as assigned.Period of EmploymentEmployment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time and ASI may discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.BenefitsCompensation and HoursHourly Starting Rate: $17.90 per hour for instruction time, $16.90 per hour for meetings, studio maintenance time, and preparation timeHourly Pay Range: $16.90 per hour - $16.90 per hour for meetings, studio maintenance, and preparation time; $17.90 per hour - $17.90 per hour for instruction timeBenefitsSocial Security (FICA)Unemployment InsuranceWorkers Compensation Insurance**Intermittent employees may not work more than 1,000 hours during any fiscal year (7/1-6/30) and are hired on an "as needed" basis only.Position may require working late nights, weekends, and holidaysPosition requires a minimum of two consecutive terms of work availability.The Associated Students, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
