Assistant Director of Safety and Security
Reporting to the Director of Safety and Security, this position is responsible for the leadership and supervision of departmental staff in providing a safe and secure environment for all community members, as well as all University property. The Assistant Director shares the supervision of a professional staff consisting of three sergeants, five security officers, one emergency dispatcher, the Student Safety Team, and the First Response Team. The Assistant Director’s work schedule will typically be assigned to night shifts and most weekends or be determined by the Director of Safety & Security in support of the department operations.The Assistant Director position will be responsible for overseeing critical investigations, both internal and criminal, for the Safety & Security Department. In addition, the employee will be responsible for the Safety & Security component of compliance and investigations for a variety of laws, regulations and mandates. These regulations include Title IX, Clery, VAWA (Violence Against Women Act, NYS Education Law including sections 129A and 129B (Enough is Enough 7/15). The employee will be expected to assist in developing emergency plans, periodically provide off-hours supervision at key events, and participate in the on-call Safety & Security administrator duties. The salary range is $68,000 to $75,000 annually.Campus LifeAssists in providing leadership and vision in securing a safe university environment.Works closely with the sergeants, security officers and emergency dispatchers in insuring that all university policies are enforced and procedures/protocols are followed.Works closely with the Director to ensure that all appropriate staff training and development are provided.Assist in the responsibility for ensuring that every sergeant and security officer meets the New York State Security Guard Act’s annual training requirements.Crisis ManagementAssists in overseeing crisis training of all sergeants, security officers and emergency dispatchers to ensure that emergency policies and protocols are in place and are being followed.Develops a close working relationship with the Department of Residence Life, Facilities Operations, the local Police and Fire/ EMS agencies.In case of any emergency the Assistant Director will support the Director of Safety and Security in assuming on-site command and control.Staff SupervisionProvides first line supervision for three sergeants, five security officers, one emergency dispatcher, the Student Safety Team and the First Response Team. Works with the Director to ensure appropriate outcomes relating to departmental complaints, personnel complaints, disagreements and appeals.On-call Supervisor when designated by the Director of Safety and Security.Coordination with Other Campus EntitiesActively participates and contributes to the Student Life team.Collaborate with the Office of Intercultural Engagement, Inclusion, and Belonging and Student Life to share insights on operations and training of staff.Works collaboratively with university departments on event staffing requests.Serves on a variety of committees.Works closely with Information Technology, Facilities Operations and Health & Counseling.Minimum QualificationsAssociates degree required. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.Two to three years of experience at a supervisory level, in the field of campus security, including patrol, investigation, supervision, training, and administration.Must have experience working with a variety of people and ability to communicate successfully with young adults, faculty, and staff.NYS Security Guard License required.Valid driver’s license, good driving history and meet university standards for driving.Pass a detailed background check.Preferred QualificationExperience in law enforcement preferred.Interested applicants must apply online at https://employment.stlawu.edu/postings/4510, uploading all required materials which are defined in the “special instructions to applicant” section.
