Associate Engineer

*Associate Engineer – Engineering Standards* *Hybrid – Richmond, VA* *12-month Contract-to-hire* *$35-40/hr. depending on experience* *Position Summary:* One of our Fortune 500 energy partners is hiring an Associate Engineer to join their Electric Transmission (ET) Engineering Standards department to support the development, maintenance, and implementation of engineering standards for substation physical design and high-voltage overhead and underground transmission lines. In this role, you will support ET Engineering Standards by helping prepare and maintain engineering requirements, standard drawings, and material specifications for substation and transmission line facilities. That covers substation equipment such as transformers, breakers, and grounding systems, plus overhead and underground transmission parts such as structures, conductors, and hardware. Working alongside Senior Engineers, you'll help with technical evaluations and review existing standards to improve safety, quality, cost, and reliability. You'll also support procurement specifications, supplier evaluations, material testing, failure investigations, and training materials. You'll work with construction, operations, supply chain, engineering, and vendor partners. Along the way, you'll build foundational expertise in both substation and transmission line standards across Electric Transmission and Distribution. This role is ideal for candidates with 0-2 years of engineering experience and provides an opportunity to build technical knowledge while contributing to consistent, safe, reliable, high-quality, and cost-effective design and construction practices across ET capital projects and operational initiatives. *Minimum Qualifications:* * 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience in either an internship, co-op, academic project, coursework, or early-career experience related to electric utilities, power systems, engineering standards, substation physical design, transmission line design, material science, structural or foundation design, overhead lines, or underground cable systems preferred. * Bachelor of Science degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering that satisfies applicable Engineer job-series criteria. * Basic understanding of engineering theories, principles, standards, and codes, with the ability and willingness to develop proficiency in substation and transmission line applications. * Familiarity with engineering standards, specifications, technical drawings, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Autodesk applications, Inventor or SolidWorks, PLS products, or other engineering design tools. * Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft 365 applications. * Basic understanding of electric utility equipment and components used in substations and transmission line facilities. * Ability to learn and apply engineering codes, regulations, and industry standards such as NESC, IEEE, and NEC. * Analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to support engineering assignments under the direction of more experienced engineers. * Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical documentation. * Ability to work effectively in a team environment, collaborate with others, ask thoughtful questions, apply feedback to engineering work products, and develop independence as technical knowledge and experience grow. * Organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage assigned tasks and seek guidance when needed. * Interest in continuous improvement, industry benchmarking, engineering standards, design consistency, material performance, constructability, field application, and lifecycle reliability. *Preferred Qualifications:* * Basic understanding of substation physical design concepts, including equipment layout, grounding fundamentals, raceway systems, general arrangement drawings, one-line diagrams, grounding layouts, raceway layouts, and equipment details preferred. * Basic understanding of transmission line materials and design concepts, including structures, foundations, conductors, cables, insulators, hardware, grounding, overhead lines, and underground cable systems preferred. *What’s in it for you?* _Brooksource, Medasource, and Calculated Hire are part of the Eight Eleven Group family of companies and operate under Eight Eleven Group, LLC.
