FOIA Specialist
A Government Agency is looking for a FOIA Specialist for a 12-18 month contract. The ideal candidate will have FOIA processing experience within the federal government along with the ability to use an electronic tracking system for managing FOIA requests (FOIAXpress and/or Casepoint is preferred). Please note: this is primarily a remote position however candidates must reside in the DMV area.
Responsibilities of the FOIA Specialist include:
Review and analyze FOIA requests and work with personnel to obtain information for FOIA requests.
Communicate with requesters to narrow or clarify FOIA requests.
Independently assess what information may be released and what information is exempt from disclosure by FOIA laws and regulations.
Thoroughly support recommendations to deny or release requested information through accurate and complete analysis and documentation.
Accurately redact documents and apply FOIA exemptions, using exemptions (b)(4), (b)(5), (b)(6) and (b)(8) and any other applicable exemptions.
Maintain accurate records about information that has been released or withheld.
Ensure that complete administrative records are filed as necessary and appropriate.
Prepare draft response letters to requesters that include the following as appropriate: (i) justifications for denials; (ii) justifications for exemptions; and (iii) determinations regarding expedited processing requests.
Ensure that information provided to requesters is comprehensive and responsive to their FOIA requests.
Requirements of the FOIA Specialist:
Expert knowledge of FOIA laws and regulations, including applying FOIA exemptions.
6+ years of FOIA processing experience in a federal government setting.
The ability to use an electronic tracking system for managing FOIA requests.
Experience with FOIAXpress and/or Casepoint is preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
