Software Engineer Computer Vision / Android
Software Engineer — Computer Vision / Android (Contract)Onsite — Holtsville, NY (NY21), on-site
6-month contract (possible extension)
CTO Gen AI Frontline App Engineering
Client is seeking a hands-on software engineer to join our CTO App Engineering team, supporting the development of an on-device intelligent document and label recognition capability for Android enterprise mobile computers. The solution combines computer vision–based template matching, OCR, and barcode decoding to extract and validate structured data from labels and documents in frontline workflows such as warehouse receiving and delivery confirmation. You will work directly with the project's lead engineer to evolve an early-stage prototype into a productizable blueprint: restructuring the codebase, migrating to Client's latest AI SDK, building out authoring and runtime Android applications, and developing test and benchmarking infrastructure for vision/OCR accuracy. This role suits an engineer who thinks outside the box — someone comfortable with ambiguity, who can prototype creative approaches to real-world vision problems (imperfect print quality, inconsistent label formats, field normalization) rather than only implementing to spec.
ResponsibilitiesDevelop and maintain Android applications (Kotlin/Java) for template authoring and frontline data extraction
Integrate and migrate computer vision, OCR, and barcode decoding capabilities using Client's AI/vision SDKs
Refactor a prototype codebase into a modular, maintainable architecture (multi-module Gradle project with clean SDK abstraction layers)
Build automated test harnesses and benchmarking tools to validate recognition accuracy, matching performance, and regression behavior across SDK versions
Implement template management features: zone/field definition UI, auto-detection of text and barcode elements, template profiles, and conflict detection
Prototype and evaluate approaches to challenging extraction problems, such as vendor-specific field naming variations and barcode-vs-OCR trade-offs
Contribute to on-device performance profiling (latency, memory) for real-time and single-shot capture workflows
Document code, integration interfaces, and test results for internal engineering consumption
Required Qualifications5+ years of professional software engineering experience
Strong Android application development skills (Kotlin and/or Java), including camera APIs, multi-module project structure, and modern Android tooling
Working knowledge of computer vision and OCR concepts: image preprocessing, feature/template matching, text detection and recognition, barcode symbologies
Experience integrating third-party or platform AI/ML SDKs into mobile applications
Familiarity with modern AI tools and the ability to apply them pragmatically in engineering workflows (e.g., AI-assisted development, LLM-based post-processing of extracted data)
Solid software engineering fundamentals: Git, code review, unit/integration testing, CI concepts
Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to work independently on loosely defined problems
Preferred QualificationsExperience with on-device ML inference on Android (e.g., TensorFlow Lite, Client AI stack, NPU/DSP acceleration)
Background in enterprise mobility, data capture, warehouse/logistics, or scanning solutions
Experience with OpenCV or similar vision libraries
Experience building developer-facing samples, blueprints, or reference applications
Familiarity with structured data formats and schema design (JSON), and with device provisioning via MDM
Work EnvironmentOn-site at Client's Holtsville, NY campus, working day-to-day with the project lead
Access to Client enterprise mobile devices for development and testing (physical device required — no emulator support for the target vision stack)
