Job SummaryMake an impact:The City of Salem is looking for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Parks Maintenance Operator (PMO) in the Recreation Department, within the Parks Operations and Maintenance Division. The successful candidate for this position will assist with all Parks & Recreation Department maintenance activities related to general groundskeeping, facility upkeep, and maintenance of athletic fields and sports courts, as well as support a robust recreation and events program.The City of Salem has an extensive park system with 91 parks and over 2300 acres of property, including a variety of Neighborhood and Community parks, nationally recognized softball complex, large event amphitheaters, reservable shelters, high use soccer and multi-use sports fields as well as hard court surface facilities including pickleball, tennis, and basketball. The PMO will be responsible to operate a full array of large ride on turf rotary mowers, landscape tools including push mowers, blowers, weed eaters, and edgers. This position could also operate mini skid steers, full size skid steers and a variety of other heavy equipment. As part of normal duties, you would be required to pull large tow behind trailers regularly.Occasionally, the PMO may act in a lead role directing the job site tasks of partner PMO’s, seasonal employees, volunteers, inmate labor, or community service workers. This is a non-supervisory position who will work under the supervision of the Parks Field Supervisor.Work ScheduleThe work schedule for this position varies and could include a weekend shift. May work overtime and weekend shifts to help support events . Working during changing weather conditions, including extreme weather events would be required for this position.Additional Information On Job ResponsibilitiesPerforms maintenance tasks including clean and repair restrooms, replace light bulbs, collects debris and garbage, clean and maintains picnic areas, inspect parks, picnic and playground areas for safety hazards, shovel snow.Individually or as a member of a crew, perform maintenance and construction tasks such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, welding, cement finishing, or other similar trades.Operate dump truck, backhoe, loader, trencher, mower, edger, diagnostic tools, and power tools related to parks maintenance.Care for natural turf fields, making sure the underlying soil has the required composition to allow proper drainage and to support the grasses used on the fields.Water lawns, trees, turf, and plants. Monitor irrigation methods to adjust the amount of water consumption and to prevent waste. Maintain irrigation systems, including winterizing the systems and starting them up in spring.Follow planned landscaping designs to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers or foliage and apply mulch.
