Engineering Manager
Overview
As Engineering Manager at Compass, you lead high-performing squads that build tools powering daily workflows for hundreds of thousands of agents. You translate business needs into technical work, remove blockers, and ensure secure, scalable delivery on our centralized platform. You’ll work closely with Product, Design, and other teams to align user workflows with clear technical specifications. This role offers impact through leading execution, mentoring engineers, and shaping the product ecosystem in a fast-paced, collaborative culture.

ResponsibilitiesOwn day-to-day agile development processes for your squad and maintain high velocity through prioritization and sprint planningDirectly manage and mentor a hybrid team of full-time engineers and contractorsCollaborate with Product, Design, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into structured technical specsEnforce engineering excellence with code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, and thorough documentationMonitor and optimize performance, reliability, and scale of applicationsCommunicate clearly across technical and non-technical partners with strong project plans and postmortems
Key requirements8+ years of software engineering experience with knowledge of design patterns, APIs, and modern cloud backend architectures3+ years of direct people management of software teams with hiring, development, and motivation experienceExperience building SaaS, workflow tools, CRM, transactional systems, or large-scale enterprise softwareProven ability to manage team backlogs, balance commitments, and ship high-quality softwareExperience directing both internal FTEs and external contractors while maintaining qualityStrong written and verbal communication with ability to translate technical constraints to business termsSolid understanding of data security, IAM permissions, data privacy, and PII protectioncollaborationstakeholder empathyclear communicationcloud backend architecturesAPIssoftware design patterns
