Position Title: Special Programs Transportation Driver / Bus MonitorDepartment: TransportationEmployment Type: Full-TimePrimary PurposeTo safely transport Special Programs (SPED) students to and from assigned locations, including routes to San Antonio and Seguin, while also serving as a bus monitor when not assigned to a driving route. This position ensures the safety, supervision, and well-being of students during transport.Key ResponsibilitiesSafely operate a school bus transporting Special Programs students to and from school or homeServe as a bus monitor on SPED routes when not drivingFollow assigned routes and directions; adjust routes as needed due to traffic, weather, or road conditionsEnsure the safety, discipline, and comfort of students during transportAssist students with boarding and exiting the busSecure wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment properlySupervise student behavior and maintain a safe environmentRespond appropriately to emergency situationsCommunicate effectively with students, staff, and parentsMaintain confidentiality regarding student informationEducation/CertificationClear and valid Texas driver's licenseSpecial Knowledge/SkillsMust be 18 years of ageAbility to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical examAbility to complete required driver training: Successful completion of 20-hour school bus certification course (provided by the district)Ability to follow written and verbal instructionsProficient map reading skillsAbility to manage student behaviorAbility to communicate effectively with othersMajor Responsibilities And DutiesVehicle OperationTransport students using school vehicle daily following assigned route and adhere to established schedules.Anticipate problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and make necessary adjustment to ensure student safety and reduce delays.Perform pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure vehicle can be operated safely and notify supervisor of needed repairs.Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical problems, and complete required corresponding reports.Student ManagementSupervise students being transported in vehicle.Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students. Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator regarding student's behavior when warranted.Perform emergency evacuation of students on vehicle when the situation warrants.Ability to work effectively with students, including those with special needsSafetyObserve all traffic laws and safety regulations for school vehicles.Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
