Alternate Bus Driver

Alternate Bus DriverEnsure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Safely operate a school bus to transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations.Qualifications:Valid Texas commercial driver's license (Class B or Class A with Passenger and School Bus Driver Endorsement)Texas School Bus Driver CertificationMust be 18 years of ageAbility to pass alcohol and drug testAbility to complete required bus driver safety trainingAbility to follow written and verbal instructionsAbility to communicate effectivelyKnowledge of student discipline procedureAbility to manage student behaviorAbility to pass bus driver physical examAbility to operate the bus safelyAbility to adapt to new routes regularlyKnowledge of Washington County city streets, preferredOne year of driving experienceMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Vehicle Operation:Follow the assigned route and adhere to established schedulesDrive bus to and from extracurricular activitiesCheck the bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify the shop supervisor of needed repairs, when necessaryReport all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reportsKeep records on bus mileage and number of passengers transported, when neededKeep the inside of the bus clean and request that bus be washed when necessaryMake sure that a vehicle has enough fuel before taking it out on an extra-curricular trip or regular routeFor extra-curricular trips, when refueling is required, also check engine oil levels and coolant levelsStudent Management:Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the streetCommunicate directly with parents in a timely manner when students cannot correct their behavior on their own while on the bus or at a bus stopMaintain discipline consistent with school district expectations, as stated in the "Code of Student Conduct on School Buses."When necessary, report student discipline problems to the Operations Specialist by completing a written "Bus Conduct Report" in a timely mannerInstruct students on safe bus riding rules and regulationsSafety:Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses, including local school district policies and proceduresBefore each route or extra-curricular trip, inspect the bus by checking tires, lights, brakes, horn, windshield wipers, and steering to ensure the bus can be operated safely before drivingEnsure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflectorsCorrect unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform the Director of Transportation, Safety Training Coordinator, or shop personnel of any conditions that are not correctableReport any hazardous conditions along the route, if it compromises the safety of the transportation operationOther:Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with the transportation office, other buses, and school campuses, only when necessary, following appropriate radio proceduresBe available to work irregular hours as neededAttend and complete the required training program to maintain state safety certificationPerform any other tasks that may be assigned from time to timeSupervisory Responsibilities: NoneEquipment Used: School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisherWork outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot) and vehicle fumes.Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripheralsPosture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twistingMotion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reachingLifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (25 pounds or less)Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; occasional districtwide travel.Minimum Hourly Rate: $23
