Financial Controller - Civil Construction

Job Title: Financial Controller – Civil Construction Department: Finance Reports To: CEO/COO FLSA Status: Exempt Position Type: Full-Time Work Location: In-Office Salary Range: $110,000 - $130,000 (Variable)  Position Summary The Financial Controller – Civil Construction is responsible for directing and overseeing the financial and accounting functions of the organization within a project-driven construction environment. This position ensures the integrity of financial reporting, compliance with regulatory standards, and the effective management of financial resources to support operational objectives and strategic initiatives. The Financial Controller provides leadership in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis while maintaining accountability for job cost accounting, revenue recognition, and internal controls. This role serves as a key business partner to executive leadership and operational teams, providing financial insight to support decision-making, profitability, and risk management. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of construction accounting principles, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to manage financial operations in a complex, deadline-driven environment.  Essential Duties and Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Develop, implement, and monitor accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls Coordinate external audits and financial reviews  Construction & Job Cost Accounting Direct job cost accounting processes to ensure accurate project cost tracking Monitor project budgets, cost allocations, and financial performance Prepare and review Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules Analyze cost variances, project profitability, and financial risks Collaborate with project management to support financial planning and forecasting  Budgeting & Financial Planning Lead the annual budgeting process Develop financial forecasts and performance projections Monitor organizational financial performance against established budgets Provide financial analysis to support strategic planning and business decisions  Cash Flow & Working Capital Management Manage cash flow forecasting and liquidity planning Oversee billing processes, including progress billings and collections Monitor retainage, receivables, and payables Support financial stability and operational funding requirements  Compliance & Risk Management Ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax requirements, and contractual obligations Maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets Identify and evaluate financial risks Support bonding, insurance, and financing requirements  Leadership & Staff Management Supervise accounting and finance personnel Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management Promote collaboration between finance and operational departments  Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required) CPA or CMA designation (preferred)  Experience Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience Minimum of 3 years of construction or civil construction accounting experience (required) Demonstrated experience with job cost accounting and financial reporting Prior supervisory or leadership experience  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles Proficiency in financial reporting and analysis Experience with accounting software and ERP systems Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills Strong organizational and time management abilities Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills High degree of accuracy and attention to detail  Key Competencies Financial Acumen Strategic Thinking Analytical Decision-Making Risk Management Leadership & Team Development Operational Partnership  Work Environment Primarily office-based Frequent interaction with executive leadership and operational teams Occasional travel to project sites may be required
