AMUSEMENT OPERATOR – Part-time

Hermann Park is one of Houston’s premier historic green spaces, home to the city’s most iconic public gardens and park amenities. Hermann Park Conservancy is a citizens’ organization dedicated to the stewardship and improvement of Hermann Park, today and for generations to come. The Amusement Operator is responsible for enhancing the Park visitor experience by providing friendly and engaging customer service in an amusement park setting. The Amusement Operator maintains and operates the Hermann Park Railroad, pedal boats, and carousel by consistently following all safety rules, regulations, and procedures. Duties and Responsibilities · Operate train in a safe manner: utilize throttle and breaks to drive train at appropriate speed for layout and weather conditions; constantly visually monitor surroundings to identify potential safety concerns; utilize train whistle and bell to alert Park guests; make eye contact with Park guests to verify they are aware of the train approaching; monitor train gauges to identify potential maintenance issues; respond to the verbal “clear” signal by conductor. · Operate the carousel in a safe manner including operating controls to start and stop the carousel, use of narration equipment for safety messaging and music, proper loading of passengers, proper usage of the wheelchair ramp and the securing of wheelchairs, and proper unloading of passengers. · Operate boats in a safe manner: visually inspect each boat to ensure sea worthiness, select proper sized vest and assist riders putting on vests, verbally give safety and operational instructions to every passenger, and enforce the four passengers per boat limitation. · Provide outstanding customer service by engaging train riders in the stations, pedal boat riders on the dock and kiosk, and carousel riders at the pavilion. Verbally greet, talk to, and thank riders. · Maintain a consistently clean environment by cleaning train and stations; pedal boats, dock, lake and kiosk; and carousel and pavilion. · Utilize opening and closing checklists to maintain safe operations. · Scan tickets and mobile barcodes at stations, kiosk, and pavilion. · Provide assistance to guests entering or exiting all the amusements. · Monitor activities to ensure adherence to rules and safety procedures. · Respond to emergency situations effectively and report any collisions and accidents to management immediately. Monitor and report unsafe conditions to management promptly. · Treat every visitor as a guest by providing outstanding customer service and engagement. Come to work on time, ready to serve the guests. Demonstrate positive body language, good hygiene, and proper dress · Acknowledge every guest with a smile, eye contact, and warm verbal greeting · Show every guest appreciation by thanking them and inviting them to return · Provide information about Park facilities, HPC programs, and rules and regulations. Working Conditions · Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license with a current clean record, able to work legally in the United States. · Must pass a background check, pre-employment drug test, and participate in random drug testing program. · Required to work at a public park with a high degree of public interaction. · Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions. · Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs. · Must be able to bend, squat, kneel, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. · Must conform to Hermann Park Conservancy dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures. · Able to work flexible hours as needed, including a rotation for nights, weekends, and holidays. · Prior work or volunteer experience with children and families is preferred. Compensation and Hours · $15/per hour · Flexible schedule, Monday – Friday, 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. weekend and holiday availability a must. Full and half day shifts are available. · Applicants must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Weekly schedules average 15–29 hours and may change due to weather or business needs.
