Pain Management Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - CVMC
The University of Vermont Health Network is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Department of Anesthesiology supporting the Chronic Pain and Spine patient population at Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC), with potential expansion to the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC).This is a new and highly specialized role, created to support growing patient demand, improve access, and enhance care coordination for patients with chronic pain and spine-related conditions.The APP will play a key role in managing patients within the pain and spine care pathway, working closely with physicians and orthopedic teams to provide follow-up care, triage, and care coordination.This position offers the opportunity to help build and shape a new APP role.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide follow-up care for patients with chronic pain conditions, particularly non-surgical spine patientsPerform triage and referral evaluation, determining appropriate care pathways:Orthopedic spine consultationPain management / procedural interventionsReferral back to primary careCoordinate care across multidisciplinary teams including Anesthesiology and OrthopedicsSupport follow-up and care planningCollaborate closely with physicians and existing APPs in the orthopedic groupContribute to improving patient access, continuity, and overall care experiencePosition DetailsFTE: 0.6 (3 days/week)Schedule: Typically Wednesday – FridayPrimary Location: CVMC Pain Management ClinicPotential Expansion: May include time at UVMMC depending on growthShift/Call: No call Patient PopulationAdults with chronic pain conditions, particularly spine-relatedPatients referred through orthopedic spine pathwaysMix of surgical candidates and non-surgical care managementRequiredCandidate Requirements & ExperienceLicensed Nurse Practitioner or Physician AssistantEligible for Vermont licensurePreferred QualificationsPrior APP experience in spine, orthopedics, neurology, or pain managementStrong clinical assessment and triage skillsAbility to manage complex chronic pain patientsNew graduates with relevant training or strong interest are encouraged to applyWhy Join UsOpportunity to build a new role within a growing service lineWork in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environmentLocated in beautiful Vermont with access to outdoor recreation and vibrant communitiesEducationNurse Practitioner (NP)Graduate of a Nurse Practitioner program (Master’s or Doctoral degree) approved by the Vermont Board of Nursing or national accrediting agencyMaintains active licensure as a registered nurse (RN) and active, unrestricted licensure to practice as an Advanced Practice RN (APRN) by the Vermont Board of NursingRNFA certification strongly recommendedDEA registration (or eligibility)Physician Assistant (PA)Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program at an institution accredited by ARC‑PA (Accreditation and Review Commission on Education for the PA)Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferredCurrent certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)Active, unrestricted licensure to practice as a PA by the Vermont Board of Medical PracticeDEA registration (or eligibility)
