REMOTE Lead Design Engineer Remote Lead Design Engineer (MEP/HVAC) Position Overview We are seeking a seasoned Remote Lead Design Engineer to lead the design and delivery of MEP systems with a focus on HVAC. The Lead Design Engineer will own technical design decisions, mentor a distributed design team, coordinate with clients and contractors, and ensure projects meet code, performance, and budget requirements. This role is fully remote and ideal for candidates with strong hands-on design experience (Revit, AutoCAD) and proven leadership in mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage the technical design of MEP projects with an emphasis on HVAC system design, performance, and energy efficiency. Develop and approve detailed design drawings, specifications, and calculations using Revit and AutoCAD; ensure BIM standards are maintained. Coordinate multidisciplinary design input (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and integrate systems to meet client requirements and project constraints. Mentor, review work of, and provide technical guidance to design engineers and drafters across remote teams; support staff development and quality assurance. Serve as primary technical contact for clients, contractors, and consultants; present design intent and resolve constructability or coordination issues. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and sustainability targets, and perform design reviews and constructability audits. Prepare and review equipment selections, load calculations, system schematics, and performance analyses; optimize cost, reliability, and maintainability. Manage project deliverables, schedules, and budgets in collaboration with project managers; identify and mitigate technical risks. Lead commissioning support and respond to technical RFIs during construction; perform site visits as needed. Drive continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and processes for remote delivery and BIM collaboration. Qualifications Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Masters degree or advanced certifications a plus. 7+ years of progressive experience in MEP/HVAC design with at least 23 years in a lead or senior technical role. Proven experience designing HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems and familiarity with electrical system coordination. Expert proficiency in Revit (BIM workflows) and AutoCAD; experience with BIM coordination tools and modeling best practices. Strong knowledge of mechanical codes, ASHRAE standards, energy modeling principles, and local authority requirements. Demonstrated leadership skills: mentoring, design reviews, and effective remote team collaboration. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for client-facing coordination, technical reports, and presentations. Project management experience: scheduling, deliverable coordination, and budget awareness. Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant certifications (e.g., LEED, CEM) preferred but not required. Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working fully remote across multiple time zones; reliable home office setup and collaboration tool proficiency.
