Job DescriptionSylvan Learning – Yorba Linda & Orange, CASylvan Learning is looking for a responsible, dependable, patient, and enthusiastic Tutor / Team Support Specialist to join our team.This is primarily a tutoring position, with some light administrative and center-support responsibilities as needed. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys working with children and is comfortable supporting students in Math, Reading, Writing and Homework Support.About the Students You'll Work WithOur tutors work with students across a variety of ages and academic levels; however, the majority of our students are elementary and middle school-aged children.Candidates should expect to spend most of their tutoring time working with younger students and must have the patience, positive attitude, and enthusiasm needed to teach children.Younger students may need additional repetition, encouragement, redirection, and support while developing foundational skills. Tutors must be comfortable adjusting their teaching and communication style based on each student's age and learning needs.The ability to teach high school students and higher-level subjects is a plus, but this position is not focused primarily on older or advanced students.Primary ResponsibilitiesTutor students inMath, Reading, Writing and Homework Support. Work primarily with elementary and middle school students, with opportunities to work with older students as neededWork with students in small-group settings (4:1) - up to 4 students per instructorFollow Sylvan's established curriculum and instructional programsProvide students with patience, encouragement, and positive academic supportAdjust your approach based on each student's age, skill level, and learning needsLearn to administer Sylvan academic assessmentsProvide friendly and professional customer serviceLight Administrative & Center SupportWhile tutoring is the primary responsibility of this position, team members are also expected to help with basic day-to-day center needs when needed. This may include:Preparing and organizing educational materialsSetting up materials for tutoring sessions and assessmentsOrganizing student paperwork and materialsGreeting students and familiesAnswering phones or taking messages when neededAssisting with basic scheduling or appointment-related tasksHelping maintain an organized front desk and learning environmentCleaning up and resetting tutoring areas after sessionsAssisting center leadership with other light administrative or operational tasksQualificationsBachelor's degree requiredMust genuinely enjoy working with childrenComfortable and patient working with elementary and middle school-aged studentsComfortable supporting students inMath, Reading, Writing and Homework SupportWilling to work with students across different ages and academic levelsResponsible, dependable, and punctualMust arrive on time and be ready to begin working at the start of the scheduled shiftPositive attitude and ability to follow directionsStrong communication and interpersonal skillsComfortable with providing customer serviceWilling to learn Sylvan's instructional and student assessment processesAble to work independently and as part of a teamReliable transportation and ability to work at both our Yorba Linda and Orange locations as neededPrevious teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or experience working with children is a plusSchedule & AvailabilityOur primary tutoring hours are:Monday–Friday: 3:00 PM–7:00 PMSaturday: availability as needed 11:00 AM - 2:00 PMCandidates should have strong availability during our 3:00 PM–7:00 PM tutoring hours.Saturday shifts may occasionally be required depending on student enrollment and center needs, but employees may not necessarily be scheduled every Saturday.Additional hours before 3:00 PM may also be available for employees who have earlier availability. Earlier hours may include student assessments, training, educational material preparation, administrative support, or other center needs.This position supports both our Yorba Linda and Orange locations, and employees may be scheduled at either center based on business and staffing needs.Training & HoursNew team members will initially be scheduled for approximately 12 hours per week while completing training and becoming familiar with the position.Training includes learning Sylvan's instructional programs, student assessment process, center procedures, customer service expectations, and other responsibilities associated with the role.As team members become more comfortable and proficient and demonstrate strong performance, reliability, punctuality, and the ability to follow procedures, additional hours may become available.Additional hours are based on performance, employee availability, student enrollment, and business needs and are not guaranteed.Interview & Observation ProcessA cover letter is required to be considered for this position. Applications submitted without a cover letter will not be reviewed or considered.As part of our interview and selection process, qualified candidates may be invited to visit one of our centers for a brief observation of our tutoring environment.This allows candidates to see how our centers operate and determine whether the position and environment are a good fit.The visit is strictly observational.
