Back End Developer

We are seeking skilled Backend Engineers to contribute their software development expertise to projects focused on training and evaluating next-generation AI systems.In this role, you will create Reinforcement Learning (RL) environments designed to test AI models on realistic backend engineering challenges, including debugging code, building APIs, working with databases, and improving system performance. You will create reproducible environments, develop reference solutions, and apply real-world engineering judgment to evaluate model performance.No prior AI experience is required—your backend engineering expertise is what matters most.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop reproducible reinforcement learning environments for evaluating AI models on backend engineering tasks.Create golden/reference solutions that demonstrate correct and production-quality approaches to assigned problems.Develop and review backend code using languages such as Python, Java, Go, Rust, C++, or TypeScript.Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve backend bugs, data-processing issues, and performance bottlenecks.Build and improve APIs, database logic, and backend features following established software engineering best practices.Optimize existing code and database queries for improved performance, reliability, maintainability, and clarity.Document technical reasoning, debugging approaches, implementation decisions, and expected outcomes.Review peer-contributed code and technical submissions for correctness, quality, and adherence to requirements.Develop realistic technical challenges that effectively evaluate an AI model's ability to reason through backend engineering problems.Preferred Qualifications1+ year of hands-on professional or substantial practical experience with at least one of the following:Python 3JavaGoRustC++TypeScriptSolid understanding of API design and backend architecture.Experience working with SQL and/or NoSQL databases.Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and core software engineering principles.Ability to debug complex backend issues, identify root causes, and implement clean solutions.Comfortable working across unfamiliar codebases and quickly understanding existing systems.Strong attention to detail and ability to produce clean, maintainable code.Excellent technical documentation and communication skills.Interest in AI, machine learning, or reinforcement learning is a plus but not required.
