CITY OF MARION MARION LIBRARY Job Description COVER LETTER REQUIRED I. TITLE: Part-Time Librarian I II. PAY CLASSIFICATION: Non Exempt III. REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Children's Services, Library Director IV. NATURE OF WORK: The position of Part-Time Librarian I (PTLI), for the Library, is a non-union position, for the City of Marion. The PTLI shall be hired by the Director with the permission of the Board and consent of the City Council. He or she shall receive compensation and benefits as the Mayor and the City Council shall fix, from time to time. The PTLI shall be responsible for assisting with the operation of the Children’s Department but will assist in other departments as needed. The PTLI must maintain a positive, helpful attitude and a neat appearance. The ability to work with patrons of all ages, races and socio-economic statuses is essential. The ability to organize one’s work, set priorities, and work without constant supervision is essential. The PTLI must be able to perform all duties related to the circulation desks and successfully complete assignments. Following and enforcing the policies and procedures of the library is required of all employees. PTLI shall report directly to the Coordinator of Children’s Services, who shall determine work assignments. V. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: · Checking materials in and out. · Answering reference questions from patrons, in person or on the phone. · Issuing library cards and determining patron eligibility for a card. · Answering the phone in a pleasant manner. · Mastering the use of all formats of library resources, including electronic resources, the Internet and the automated card catalog. · Maintaining patron records and patron privacy. · Shelving materials when Library Assistants are not available or need extra help. · Assisting patrons with their needs in a pleasant and professional manner. · Assisting other staff members with the enforcement and interpretation of library policies, especially patron behavior policies. · Assisting patrons with Interlibrary Loan requests, use of the Internet, and library equipment. · Occasionally leading children’s programs planned by and at the discretion of the Coordinator of Children’s Services. VI. TYPICAL DUTIES: · Work normal shift, which consists of up to 19 hours per week. This often could require working evenings and Saturdays. · Use equipment, including but not limited to: a) Personal computer and peripherals. b) Photocopier. c) Fax machine. d) Telephone. e) Microfilm reader/printer. f) Cricut. · Assist preparing crafts and displays for the Children’s Department. · Prepare PowerPoint presentations for Children’s Department programs. · Maintain a neat, clean and well-stocked work area. · Assist patrons with e-book devices, tablets, computers, and microfilm reader/printer etc. · Assist with interlibrary loans and other special services. · Other duties as assigned. VII. QUALIFICATIONS: · Must have a High School Diploma. Some general college or liberal arts courses are desirable. · Must possess excellent organizational skills. · Must possess good analytical and problem solving skills as well as time-management skills. · Must have excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills. · Must possess working knowledge of computer applications. · Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint preferred. · Prior experience working with children preferred. · Experience using a Cricut preferred. · Crafting experience preferred. · Must be able to successfully complete all pre-employment requirements such as; background investigations, drug/alcohol screening, and residency requirements.
