Career RoadmapsSoftware ArchitectSoftware Architect RoadmapYou own the decisions that are expensive to change. Architect is a destination role - typically 8+ years in, at $140-180k+ US - but the skills are built deliberately from mid-level onward. This roadmap is the deliberate version: design reps, trade-off literacy, and writing that moves organisations.By Carl Mills Last updated 10 July 2026 progress saves in your browser free personalized PDF study plan.0%0/16 items completed 13 critical left0/100Critical onlyImport FileStage 1 - Senior Engineering Base 3 item(s) Deep competence in at least one stack, shipped and operated in production Critical Production scars: incidents owned, postmortems written Critical Working breadth: databases, queues, caches, cloud services - and their failure modes Critical Stage 2 - Design Skills 5 item(s) Data architecture: modelling, ownership boundaries, migration strategies Critical Patterns with judgement: monolith-first, when microservices earn their cost, event-driven pitfalls Critical System design reps: practise designing realistic systems aloud, weekly Critical Not just for interviews - reps build the pattern library architects run on. Trade-off literacy: consistency vs availability, sync vs async, build vs buy, boring-tech bias Critical Security architecture: trust boundaries, authN/Z models, secrets, compliance basics Stage 3 - The Actual Job 5 item(s) Design docs + ADRs people follow: context, options, decision, consequences Critical Influence without authority: aligning teams, disagreeing well, sequencing change Critical Run design reviews that improve designs without crushing authors Critical AI-era judgement: where LLMs fit systems - and where they must not Architecture economics: cost models, fitness functions, evolutionary change Stage 4 - Proof of Scope 3 item(s) A portfolio of 3+ design docs/ADRs for systems that shipped Critical One cross-team design you led end to end - your headline story Critical System design interviews at architect level practised aloud Critical Your selections are saved in your browser. Write design docs people actually follow, run architecture reviews, and build the trade-off vocabulary (consistency vs availability, build vs buy, coupling costs). Titles follow demonstrated scope.Do architects still code? The credible ones do - enough to prototype, review meaningfully and keep their instincts honest. The failure mode is the ivory-tower architect whose designs ignore friction. Most orgs now prefer "architect who codes" or principal-engineer shapes. Is there a certification for architects?Cloud architect certs (AZ-305, AWS SA Pro) usefully structure platform knowledge and pass HR filters for cloud-architect roles. For software architecture broadly, a portfolio of design docs and delivered systems outweighs any certificate. What next once the list is green?Prove it under pressure: take the free Mock Interview, then check your application signals. Not sure this is your direction?Compare every tech role - what you'd build, what it pays, and who it suits - on the roadmaps hub.Compare all roadmaps
