R&D Engineer Apprentice
SUMMARY
The Research & Development Engineer Apprentice supports engineering and testing activities while developing the technical skills required to progress into a full R&D Engineer role. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, this role is designed for individuals who are self-motivated, solution-oriented, and eager to grow their skillset in a hands-on aerospace environment. The Apprentice will work closely with engineers and technicians to support prototype development, testing, and process improvement while building proficiency in engineering concepts and problem-solving techniques, with a clear path to advancement.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assist in the development of new processes, technologies, and products under guidance of senior engineers
Support prototype builds, test samples, and conceptual process development
Assist with troubleshooting issues related to processes, equipment, and testing
Help prepare test plans, procedures, and reports with direction from senior team members
Learn and apply knowledge of materials, processes, and equipment for production integration
Review and interpret engineering drawings, test plans, and reports
Support R&D Engineers and Technicians in daily project and testing activities
Participate in team, customer, and project meetings as required
Follow safety protocols and maintain proper use of equipment in all environments
Manage multiple tasks while developing time management and prioritization skills
KNOWLEDGE
Basic understanding of mechanical or engineering concepts
Familiarity with materials, tools, and manufacturing processes (or willingness to learn)
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documents
Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Exposure to or willingness to learn data acquisition and process control systems
COMPETENCIES
Basic understanding of mechanical and engineering concepts.
Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documents.
Familiarity with basic computer software (e.g., Microsoft Office).
Experience with or willingness to learn data acquisition systems and process control systems.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED required.
Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or related field is a plus but not required
2+ years of relevant hands-on or technical experience preferred (mechanical, fabrication, maintenance, etc.)
Experience may include automotive, aircraft, machining, welding, fabrication, motorsports, agriculture, or similar fields
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, reliability, and willingness to learn required
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment: exposure to noise, particulate matter, and other hazards in certain manufacturing areas (eye and ear protection required).
Possible travel to support projects or team activities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work in various environments, including office settings, manufacturing plants, and outdoor areas.
Capacity to stand or sit for long periods (up to 10 hours/day).
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., bend, stoop, and reach overhead.
Willingness to climb step stools or enter confined workspaces for process evaluation.
