Director of Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing Design
Director of Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing DesignDesign Operations • Melville, NY (On-Site / Hybrid)The Role:The Director of Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing Design owns the technical engine of New Age Engineering. This role exists to take the head of design seat from the Founder — so the firm can scale without engineering becoming a bottleneck. You are responsible for the quality, consistency, and throughput of every project that leaves this office. You set the design standard, lead quality assurance across all active work, and serve as the final word on every code question, design decision, and technical challenge the team encounters. You lead and develop a team of engineers across mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines. Your job is not just to direct the work — it is to make every engineer on this team better than they were when you found them.We have systems in place and are building toward becoming a leader in engineering automation. You will refine what exists, drive efficiency across the design team, and push the firm forward — grounded in the fundamentals that make our work credible and defensible. What You'll Own:• Serve as the firm’s technical authority — final say on engineering decisions, code interpretations, and design standards across all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines• Lead day-to-day engineering operations: assign work, manage workload across projects, conduct quality assurance reviews, and ensure nothing sits idle• Mentor and develop the engineering team — build their fundamentals, hold the technical bar, and create a culture of continuous improvement• Own the firm’s design standards, drawing templates, and calculation packages — build and maintain what does not yet exist• Drive engineering automation initiatives — identify where repetitive work can be systematized, help select or build the tools to do it, and train the team on new workflows• Serve as a technical point of contact for key clients and architects on complex or high-stakes projects• Report directly to the President and participate in firm-level decisions on staffing, tools, and growth strategyWhat You Bring:• 10+ years of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering experience, with demonstrated depth in at least two disciplines and working knowledge of the third• PE license required — New York preferred; multi-state a plus• Extensive knowledge of the NYC Mechanical Code, NYC Fuel Gas Code, and NYC Plumbing Code — you can answer code questions cold, without looking things up• Experience leading and developing an engineering team — not just producing drawings, but owning the output of others• Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit; familiarity with engineering calculation tools• Track record of delivering complex multitrade projects on time and to a high standard in a consulting environment• Ability to break down complex engineering concepts clearly — whether you’re talking to a client, an architect, or a junior engineer who needs it explained from the ground up• Hands-on knowledge of boilers, pumps, cooling towers, VRF systems, hot water heating systems, piping design, and ductwork design — you have designed these systems, not just reviewed them• Direct, candid communication style — you give honest feedback, hold people to a standard, and do it with enough respect that they want to improve, not defend themselvesWhat Success Looks Like in 30 Days:• Working alongside the Founder — observing how we operate, learning the team, and understanding how projects move from start to finish• Reviewing construction documents for all active projects — in the office and on-site — to understand where we are and what each job requires• Interviewing each team member to understand their role, their strengths, and how they currently operate• Reviewing our drawing templates, specifications, and piping diagrams — and delivering a written game plan to the Founder for revamping our systemsIn 90 Days:• You have completed a full audit of active projects — you know where every job stands, what the risks are, and what needs attention• You have introduced at least one improvement to our quality assurance or production workflow that the team is already using• Engineering staff are coming to you — not the Founder — with technical questions, quality assurance issues, and design meeting coordination• Introduced to key clients alongside the Founder — presenting a unified front that you are leading their projects with full support behind you• Each engineer has been assessed — their skill level documented, their strengths deployed, and a development plan in place to optimize how the team performs togetherIn 1 Year:• Design time has been cut in half — driven by improved processes, better workflows, and a team that knows exactly what to do and how to do it• Plan revisions have been cut in half — the result of clearer scope of work, tighter quality assurance, and a playbook the whole team followsSchedule & Location:Location: 572 Walt Whitman Road, Melville, NY 11747 — On-Site with hybrid flexibility after ramp-upHours: Full-time. If you join New Age Engineering, you are not just joining a firm — you are joining a team that holds itself to a real standard. The right person for this role will see themselves in each of these.Get It DoneProjects are either being worked on or on hold for a clear reason — they do not sit. Deadlines are commitments. If something changes, the client hears from you immediately — not when they follow up. This is not a place for people who need to be chased.Do the Right ThingTell the truth. Hold the standard. Follow the code, give honest advice, and push back when something is wrong — even when it is inconvenient. Do what is right for the client and the firm. Not what is easy.Just Say ItIf there is bad news, say it. Do not sit on it, do not soften it into nothing, do not let it fester. Clients hear difficult news directly and promptly. Problems between people get addressed with those people — not around them. Avoidance and passive aggression are not tolerated here.Confident PrecisionWe automate what can be automated so that engineers can engineer. Follow the systems in place and always look for ways to make them better. When a decision needs to be made, make it — confidently, without waiting for perfect information that may never come.Client PartnershipClients are how we stay in business. Work with them, not at them. When problems arise, focus on the solution — not the problem. If you view client relationships as a partnership worth protecting, you will operate well here.Always LearningThis industry has a lifetime of knowledge to acquire. Codes change, technology evolves, and the best people in this field never stop learning. Every person on this team is expected to be better today than they were yesterday. If you are someone who invests in yourself, you will find a home here.No BullshitNo drama. No passive aggression. No politics. If there is a problem, address it directly — with the person involved, privately. If it cannot be resolved between the two of you, only then will the leadership team get involved to seek a resolution. Treat people the way you want to be treated, and that includes being honest enough to have uncomfortable conversations rather than letting things fester.About New Age Engineering PLLCNew Age Engineering is a full-service MEP consulting engineering firm based in Melville, NY.
