Substation Senior Structural Engineer
Overview
In this role, you will lead and execute structural design for HV substations up to 500 kV, shaping reliable power delivery. You’ll work with project teams across locations, mentor junior engineers, and help establish best practices. The position blends hands-on design with leadership, quality assurance, and collaboration to deliver world-class substation projects. This is an opportunity to advance HDR’s grid modernization efforts and contribute to resilient energy infrastructure.
ResponsibilitiesLead and oversee structural engineering tasks for substation members (rolled steel, lattice framing, folded plate shapes)Perform foundation design for substation structures (drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles)Support substation layout designs and BOMs; prepare/write construction specificationsMentor and supervise project engineers, EITs, and CAD designers; assign tasksCoordinate quality checks per HDR QMS; review deliverablesCollaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers and internal teams to develop standardsManage multiple projects concurrently across locations; participate in training and technical developmentContribute to technical papers/presentations for conferencesParticipate in project reviews; travel as needed
Key requirementsBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural EngineeringMin 10 years of structural engineering experience in HV substation projectsProfessional engineering license (PE/P.Eng)Experience with design software: STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L-Pile, or equivalentsFamiliarity with AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318; knowledge of NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to work independently and in teamsArchitectural/engineering consulting firm experience preferredProficient with AutoCAD, RAM, ETABS, SAFE or similar toolsWillingness to travel; strong collaboration across regional teamsSelf-starterStrong written and verbal communicationCollaborative team playerHV substation structural design up to 500 kVFoundation design: drilled piers, spread footings, driven pilesStructural detailing for steel and concrete
