Teachers are responsible for using a classical Christian education model to teach students, develop virtue, and help each student grow into the individual God intends. Lessons are carefully planned to inspire and motivate students and to support them in reaching the learning outcomes. A successful teacher creates a nurturing environment where all students feel known and valued. The English teacher will teach literature and composition courses within a classical liberal arts/Great Books curriculum.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesApproach classroom instruction and student interactions from a Christian worldviewCollaborate with grade-level teams and department members to plan and implement the school's liberal arts curriculumActively ensure academic growth in every student by utilizing a variety of instructional techniquesBuild positive partnership with parents through proactive communicationCreate a predictable and supportive classroom environmentIncrease professional knowledge by participating in professional development opportunitiesPlan and develop engaging, age-appropriate course of study in the classroom, adhering to educational best practices, and prepare daily and weekly lesson plans to help students meet the learning goalsFollow through on routine job responsibilities including grading, record keeping, attendance, and lesson planningParticipate in collaborative evaluation processes with Division Head and Vice President for Academic AffairsAttend weekly faculty meetingBe involved in at least one co- or extra-curricular responsibilityAttend school events outside regular school hours including, but not limited to Parent/Teacher Conferences, Curriculum Night, arts performances, student socials, open houses, and professional development sessionsMaintain a learning environment that is organized and pleasant in appearanceMonitor halls, study periods, and lunchrooms with other faculty and staffEnforce safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitorsPerform other related duties as assignedSpecific Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeach expository writing from literatureTeach literature from a classical and Christian perspective, emphasizing the Great Books of civilizationTeach grammar and vocabulary, focusing on classical roots and fundamental language structureTeach thinking and speaking with a concentration on rhetorical skillsInspire students to see truth, beauty, and goodness in the texts and to enjoy God through themInspire students to love literature and desire beauty through literatureSupervisory ResponsibilitiesNoneRequirementsBachelor's degree required; degree in English or a closely related field preferredTeaching experience preferredFamiliarity or experience with the classical Christian education model preferredHold CPR/AED/First Aid certification (with epinephrine autoinjector supplement) or obtain certification within 90 days of employment start dateCurrently authorized to work in the United States for any employer (sponsorship not available for this position)Thorough understanding of pedagogy and the best practices of educationDesire to teach middle and/or upper school-aged children and ability to adapt to their developmental statusAbility to design lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and individual or collaborative projects and researchStrong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.Excellent verbal and written communication skillsExcellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situationsExcellent organizational skills and attention to detailCreative analytical and problem-solving skillsProficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related softwareCritical Performance CompetenciesPositively support the school's policies and practices and work collaboratively in a professional organizationTruthful, positive, and purposeful when communicating with othersAble to use strong written and oral communication skills to transfer thoughts and express ideasFlexible and adaptable in dealing with new, different, or changing requirementsMaintain confidentiality and security of informationHold self and others accountable to accomplish resultsEffective in handling multiple concurrent tasksFamiliar with Microsoft Word and Outlook, ability to learn and work with the school's integrated data-based software package as neededAdhere to biblical standards in all areas of conductPhysical RequirementsProlonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teachMust be able to lift up to 15 pounds at timesMust be able to traverse classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child#LI-JD1Salary Description
