Working under physician direction, CRTs assess, treat, and monitor patients with conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and respiratory failure. They play a critical role in emergency, acute, and long-term care settings. Key Responsibilities Assess patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary conditions Administer oxygen therapy, aerosol medications, and breathing treatments Operate and monitor ventilators and life-support systems Perform diagnostic tests such as arterial blood gases (ABGs) and pulmonary function tests Assist with intubation, extubation, and airway management procedures Monitor patient responses and adjust treatments per physician orders Educate patients and families on respiratory care, equipment use, and disease management Maintain accurate and timely documentation of treatments and patient status Ensure infection control and safety protocols are followed Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals Requirements & Qualifications Education & Certification Associate degree (minimum) in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited program Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) Active state license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist (if required) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required Advanced certifications such as ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) may be required or preferred Experience New graduates eligible; clinical rotations required 1–2 years of experience preferred (varies by employer) Experience in ICU, emergency, neonatal, or pulmonary rehab settings is a plus Skills & Competencies Strong knowledge of respiratory care procedures and equipment Ability to operate ventilators and critical care devices Excellent clinical assessment and problem-solving skills Strong communication and patient education abilities Ability to work in high-pressure and emergency situations Attention to detail and strong documentation skills Compassionate, patient-focused approach Work Environment Hospitals (ICU, ER, NICU), outpatient clinics, pulmonary rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, and home health May require working nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts Physically demanding role requiring standing, lifting, and rapid response Additional Requirements Ability to pass background check and drug screening Up-to-date immunizations and health records Compliance with state and federal healthcare regulations Compensation & Benefits (Varies by Employer) Competitive salary or hourly pay Health, dental, and vision insurance Paid time off and holidays Continuing education and certification reimbursement Retirement plans (e.g., 401(k)) Shift differentials and bonus opportunities Apply now to start your next travel adventure!
