Heavy Equipment Operator & Diesel Mechanic
We are seeking a versatile Heavy Equipment Operator with Diesel Mechanic experience to support utilities construction, maintenance, and emergency repair operations. This dual-role position is ideal for someone equally comfortable operating heavy equipment in the field and performing hands-on mechanical diagnostics and repairs to keep machinery safe, reliable, and operational.Requirements3-5 years of experience operating heavy equipment and/or performing diesel or heavy equipment maintenanceStrong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and mechanical systemsProficiency operating loaders, backhoes, tractors, dozers, and motor gradersProven mechanical troubleshooting and repair capabilitiesBasic computer and mobile device proficiency for service logs and work ordersAbility to work outdoors and perform physically demanding tasksWillingness to participate in emergency on-call rotationDiesel Mechanic certification or vocational trainingExperience in utilities, public works, or water district operationsCDL or ability to obtain oneWelding or fabrication experienceFamiliarity working on rented or specialized equipmentPreferred QualificationsDiesel Mechanic certification or vocational trainingExperience in utilities, public works, or water district operationsCDL or ability to obtain oneWelding or fabrication experienceFamiliarity working on rented or specialized equipmentResponsibilitiesHeavy Equipment OperationsOperate a variety of heavy and light equipment, including dozers, motor graders (with sloper blade), loaders, backhoes, rubber-tired tractors, dump trucks, and rented or specialty equipmentPerform excavation, grading, leveling, and earthmoving according to project plans, stakes, and hand signalsSupport canal, levee, and utilities infrastructure construction and repair projectsTransport materials and complete multiple passes as needed to achieve precise grade specificationsDiesel & Equipment MaintenanceConduct preventive maintenance and troubleshoot mechanical issues on diesel-powered and heavy equipmentDiagnose and repair engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, and hydraulic systemsPerform routine servicing such as oil and filter changes, hose and belt replacement, and leak inspectionsIdentify safety or performance issues and document maintenance and repair needsEquipment Setup & Field SupportAttach and remove implements using clevis or wedge pin hitchesConnect PTO shafts, hydraulic lines, belts, and mechanical linkagesPerform daily inspections and routine servicing of assigned equipmentAssist with general field maintenance, including basic site and weed controlSafety & Emergency ResponseFollow all safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirementsReport hazardous conditions immediatelyParticipate in safety training and emergency response effortsIf you're an experienced Heavy Equipment Operator who can also turn a wrench, this role offers a stable opportunity to apply both skill sets in a utilities-focused environment where your expertise truly matters.
