Apply now for this excellent Life Insurance & Annuity Controller job by following the instructions at the end of this Job description!About the RoleThe Life Insurance & Annuity Controller directs the statutory and regulatory financial affairs of the organization. In this role, the Controller oversees all statutory accounting activities, statutory financial statements, statutory audits, capital management initiatives, financial health metrics, L&H Blue Book and regulatory filings, financial data calls, and tax-related reporting, including premium, federal, and state taxes. Furthermore, the Controller serves as a key partner to executive leadership, ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across the organization.Key ResponsibilitiesThe Life Insurance & Annuity Controller willEnsure the Company's financial statements remain accurate, complete, and fully compliant with all statutory and regulatory requirementsCollaborate closely with the Actuarial team to:Develop and validate reserve estimatesAnalyze loss estimates and reserve adequacy.Support accurate statutory reporting.Establish, maintain, and monitor premium revenue recognition policies to ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards.Oversee and review all reinsurance accounting and reporting activities to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.Partner with the Compliance team to proactively address financial regulatory requirements and emerging regulatory developments.Lead the preparation, review, and submission of:Quarterly statutory financial statements.Annual statutory financial statements.Related regulatory filings and supporting documentation.Direct and successfully deliver annual statutory audits while coordinating effectively with external auditors and internal stakeholders.Manage statutory capital levels and continuously monitor key financial health indicators, including:Risk-Based Capital (RBC).BCAR metrics.Other regulatory and internal capital measures.Develop, maintain, and enhance workpapers, financial models, and reporting tools that support statutory financial reporting and ongoing financial oversight.Oversee outsourced providers responsible for preparing:GAAP tax provisions.Statutory tax provisions.Manage and monitor state deposits to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.Coordinate and deliver timely, accurate responses to financial data calls from regulators and other external parties.Develop, implement, and strengthen internal controls while identifying opportunities for process improvements and automation.Mentor, develop, and lead team members while fostering accountability, professional growth, and operational excellence.QualificationsRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.At least 12 years of relevant public accounting and/or insurance industry experience.At least 8 years of Life & Health insurance experience.Strong expertise in statutory accounting principles (SSAP).Demonstrated knowledge of:Insurance financial operations.Reinsurance accounting and reporting.Premium accounting and revenue recognition.Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal and external stakeholders.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex situations involving multiple variables and competing priorities.Advanced Excel skills, including the ability to analyze and manipulate large data sets.Ability to apply technical accounting expertise to real-world business transactions and operational challenges.Ability to develop, implement, document, and monitor effective internal control frameworks.Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to consistently meet deadlines.Self-motivated and capable of working independently in a fast-paced, high-growth environments.Preferred QualificationsFive or more years of people leadership and team management experience.At least 12 years of relevant public accounting and/or insurance industry experience.Experience with:WingsPlus/SovosFIS systems and applicationsLeadership CompetenciesThe successful candidate will:Lead teams effectively while maintaining a strategic perspective rather than becoming overly involved in transactional procesDevelop team members through coaching, mentoring, and ongoing trainEncourage professional courage by empowering employees to identify, recommend, and implement process improvements.Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.Evaluate workflow and project tradeoffs while making decisions that balance immediate business needs with long-term organizational objectives.Anticipate the needs of a growing organization and proactively develop scalable financial processes and reporting structures.Drive operational excellence through innovation, automation, and disciplined execution.
