The Spence School Upper School History Leave Replacement Full-Time September - November 2026 or September - beginning of October 2026 Overview The Spence School seeks two full-time Upper School (Grades 10-11) history teachers for leave-replacement positions. This position represents an opportunity to join a team of teachers engaged in the ongoing development of a dynamic Upper School history curriculum within the context of a girls' school. The ideal candidate shows an appreciation for the craft of teaching, historical thinking and analytical skills, and regards collaboration as a community of adult learners as an essential component of professional growth. ResponsibilitiesTeach three to four sections of 10th or 11th grade American HistoryCollaborate in teaching teams to design curriculum, assessments, and teaching methodsParticipate in department-wide initiatives concerning issues of pedagogy and curriculumAttend meetings and required community events during and after the school day QualificationsFinds joy in working with high school students and in school lifeApproaches work with optimism, energy, kindness, and a sense of humorDemonstrates cultural competency and skills engaging with and learning from people with diverse backgrounds and experiencesDemonstrates pedagogical skill, an appreciation for the craft of teaching, and love of history as a disciplineDemonstrates knowledge and experience in teaching a variety of historical texts and perspectivesRegards collaboration as an essential component of professional growth and values working on a teamEnjoys a commitment that extends beyond the classroom, including contributions to the larger school communityPossesses a master's degree or equivalent experienceHas sustained experience teaching Upper School History (Grades 9-12) Spence is committed to an equitable program and a diverse faculty and student body.
