Class Summary
This class is the third of three levels in the Network Support Section series. Incumbents manage and direct the activities of The Network Support Section.
The Network Administrator is responsible for designing, implementing, administering, and maintaining the organization's network infrastructure. This role ensures reliable, secure, and efficient connectivity across all systems and users to support daily operations. The Network Administrator configures and manages network devices such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless systems. They continuously monitor network performance, troubleshoot issues, and respond to outages to minimize downtime and maintain service continuity. This position also enforces network security measures, manages user access controls, and supports system updates, backups, and disaster recovery efforts. In addition, the Network Administrator maintains technical documentation and collaborates with IT staff and stakeholders to support infrastructure improvements and technology initiatives.

Essential Duties
Install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, and related systems to ensure a stable and efficient network environment
Monitor network performance, analyze traffic, and proactively troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and connectivity issues to minimize downtime
Implement and manage network security measures, including firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and access controls to protect organizational data
Administer user accounts, permissions, and authentication systems while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and security standards
Perform routine system maintenance, including updates, patches, firmware upgrades, backups, and disaster recovery testing to maintain system integrity
Maintain accurate network documentation, including configurations, diagrams, procedures, and change management records
Collaborate with IT staff, vendors, and service providers on network projects, while evaluating and recommending improvements, upgrades, and new technologies
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field; three years of network administration, managing network infrastructure, installation, configuration, monitoring or trouble shooting; 3 years' experience implementing and maintaining network system updates, and performance optimization practices; or an equivalent combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential responsibilities of the assigned position.
Licensing Requirements
Valid Driver's License
Cisco Certified Network Associate preferred
Comp TIA Network preferred
Knowledge
Principles of computer networking, including LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and VPN technologies
Network hardware and infrastructure components such as routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points
Network security principles, including access controls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and secure configuration practices
Network monitoring and diagnostic tools for performance analysis, troubleshooting, and capacity planning
Server and operating system environments (e.g., Windows Server and/or Linux basics)
Backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning concepts
Virtualization and cloud networking concepts (e.g., Azure, AWS, or similar platforms, if applicable)
IT documentation practices, including network diagrams, configuration records, and change management procedures
Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles and risk mitigation strategies
Skills
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving network issues
Ability to configure, manage, and maintain network hardware and software systems
Knowledge of network security practices and ability to implement protective measures
Analytical skills to monitor network performance and identify optimization opportunities
Strong attention to detail for system configuration, documentation, and change management
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple issues in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency in using network monitoring and diagnostic tools
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to support IT operations and projects
Strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate technical documentation and records Managing projects
Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work directions.
Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
