Software Engineer (Mainframe) – Hybrid

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer with a strong background in mainframe development to join an enterprise technology team. This role is responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, and supporting mission-critical business applications in a collaborative Agile environment.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with COBOL development, production support, and mainframe technologies while working closely with business stakeholders, analysts, and cross-functional technical teams.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, test, implement, and maintain enterprise software applications.
Collaborate with business analysts, product owners, and development teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Participate in Agile ceremonies, sprint planning, backlog refinement, and release activities.
Develop high-quality, production-ready code while following established coding standards.
Perform application design, coding, testing, debugging, implementation, and ongoing maintenance.
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve production issues in both batch and real-time environments.
Support application enhancements, upgrades, and issue resolution.
Produce and maintain technical documentation.
Conduct code reviews and recommend performance improvements.
Ensure application security, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, automation, and DevOps best practices.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
10+ years of hands-on mainframe development experience.
Strong experience with production incident triage and troubleshooting.
Expert-level proficiency in:
COBOL
Easytrieve
JCL
CICS
TSO
Experience supporting both batch and online production environments.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Experience working within Agile development methodologies.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
Experience with:
Jira
ISPW/Topaz
Agile methodologies
Previous experience within the insurance or financial services industry is preferred.
Relevant technical certifications are a plus.
Desired Skills
Experience working across enterprise technology environments.
Knowledge of CI/CD and DevOps practices.
Experience with database technologies and code versioning tools.
Ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Salary Range: $100,000-$145,000 per year
