General Definition of WorkThe dean of students, under moderate supervision, performs intermediate level work with limited decision-making discretion administering student discipline. Position facilitates an atmosphere in which learning is of the upmost importance by implementing policies to maintain student discipline. Responsibilities include overseeing discipline plans and programs which enable students to acquire the social and interpersonal skills necessary for academic achievement. Employee performs complex work to carry out Board of Education policies and procedures under the direction of the building level principal.QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.Essential FunctionsAdhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and proceduresEnforce policies, procedures, and rules regarding behavior on school property; maintain order in a fair and just mannerAssist with the supervision and monitoring of student activities such as lunch, class changes, assemblies, concerts, dances, and sporting eventsProvide direct support to school administrators and staff regarding behavioral issuesAssist with the development and implementation of the school discipline plan and behavior management programsCoordinate school bus supervision before and after schoolOversee and coordinate the activities of the campus security associate and the ISS programObserve and document behavior of individual students; maintain accurate records of student progressMonitor and supervise students' truancy and tardiness; follow up in cases of unexcused or excessive absencesMonitor students on probation or with criminal recordsCollaborate with school resource officers and local law enforcement agencies to make referrals if necessaryMaintain communication with parents/guardians in relation to student conduct and discipline; attend parent conferences as necessaryProvide for student and parent due process in accordance with provisions of federal, state and school system rules and regulations; ensures confidentiality of all student records.Works cooperatively with social services and community agencies in accessing resources for students and their parents.Facilitate professional development and attend other related meetings as needed/requiredParticipate in professional development workshops and trainingCreate an environment with positive communicationPerform related work as assigned or requiredKnowledge, Skills, AbilitiesComprehensive knowledge of the principles, standards, and expectations of classroom management and student disciplineComprehensive knowledge on how to utilize appropriate data and information to make instructional decisions for studentsDemonstrated knowledge and understanding of various learning styles, curriculum development and program evaluation, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learningSkilled in the use of current software to include word processing, spreadsheets, and desktop publishing applicationsAbility to learn and use specialized tools, equipment or software related to business needsAbility to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operationsAbility to communicate effectivelyAbility to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationshipsAbility to employ positive communication skills in all settings/mediumsAbility to problem-solve utilizing sound judgmentAbility to maintain confidentiality regarding school system businessAbility to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgementAbility to develop related charts, graphs, reports, and records pertaining to school planning and strategyAbility to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate new and/or current programsDemonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environmentEducation And ExperienceBachelor's degree requiredValid NC teaching license requiredMinimum of three (3) years' experience in education or related area requiredEquivalent combination of experience and educationSpecial RequirementsPossess and maintain a NC Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation.Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
