Chief Financial Officer
Job Description:
Ensure that Bend the Arc has the financial and operational systems and staff to achieve its strategic goals and objectives
Provide analytical support to the organizations’ management including development of internal reporting capabilities
Collaborate closely with the CEO and the senior management team to help guide the overall management of the organization
Collaborate closely with the Chief Development Officer to ensure coordinated systems and processes and aligned financial planning between finance and development
Guide strategic financial planning, and ensure the organizations have efficient and effective financial systems that support their missions
Advise the CEO and other key members of senior management on financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, growth priorities, and policy matters
Ensure transparent reporting that informs decision-making in a strategic way
Oversee the bookkeeping team and operations team in the preparation of financial reports for internal stakeholders, board members, and grantors as required
Provide financial analysis and insights to support informed decision-making by leadership
Ensure all financial systems between the entities are managed in line with legal obligations and accounting and reporting best practices
Supervise and lead the finance team, as well as consultants including outsourced accounting support, auditors, compliance and charity filing firms, and organizational legal support
Serve as the management liaison to the boards and finance and audit committees; and effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at select meetings of the boards of directors and board committees
Lead the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget in collaboration with the bookkeeping, operations and development teams, CEO, and senior staff
Provide financial management and oversight for the budget
Ensure timely delivery of transparent and informative monthly budget reports
Monitor inter-organizational contracts, resource sharing agreements and cash flow between entities while ensuring appropriate compliance systems
Ensure that the organizations maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including accounts payable and accounts receivable
Ensure best practices in recording and categorizing all expenses, including proper documentation and adherence to budget guidelines
Be accountable for efficient systems to manage and process new vendors and organization-wide purchasing
Optimize banking relationships to ensure smooth financial operations and to protect the assets of the organizations
Be accountable for implementing best practices on financial controls systems at all levels of the organizations
Supervise the preparation of external financial audits, and liaise with the boards of directors and the audit committees on audit planning, review and approval
Coordinate with the bookkeeping, legal, and operations teams to ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, tax requirements, and reporting obligations for political and nonprofit organizations, including campaign finance reports as needed
Support managers in the training and implementing of compliance procedures and requirements with their direct reports
Ensure that Bend the Arc programs have the operational and logistical support they need to be successful
Ensure Bend the Arc budget managers have up-to-date budget to actuals and internal reporting mechanisms to accurately track and plan their budgets
Lead our fiscal sponsorship program to ensure maintenance of existing relationships and sustainable growth of this revenue stream
Ensure consistent and efficient management of contracts across the organization
Create new operational systems as required, and lead with innovation to meet the organization’s changing needs
Requirements:
10 years of relevant experience (or combination of education and experience) in financial and compliance leadership roles at multi-entity organizations (501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and PAC), CPA preferred
Experience managing a team, supporting growth and development of direct reports through clear communication of expectations, frequent, timely and actionable feedback and building of trusting relationships grounded in an understanding of power
Capacity to hold, organize, and synthesize large amounts of information at a complex organization with multiple streams of work happening simultaneously
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
Strong project management and administrative skills with the ability to create and improve systems and processes
Motivation and organization to accomplish tasks and complete projects, working both independently and collaboratively in a group setting (within and across teams)
Demonstrates a strong commitment to justice and equity and grounding in pro-Black values and practices; familiarity and alignment with Bend the Arc’s mission and vision
Developed racial equity praxis (analysis and skill) that can be applied to day to day work
