Subject Matter Expert - Optometry Program Development

About the Role: We are seeking an experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Optometry education to support the design, development, and academic review of a new Doctor of Optometry (OD) program. The SME will play a critical role in ensuring curriculum quality, clinical competency development, regulatory compliance, and alignment with accreditation standards for delivery in on-ground and hybrid formats. Key Responsibilities: Design and develop program curriculum, course outlines, and syllabi for Optometry education, covering didactic, laboratory, and clinical components Develop clinical competencies, patient-care, and vision-assessment learning experiences Define clinical training, externship, and patient-care requirements Review and update existing program documentation to ensure academic rigor and current practice relevance Align curriculum with Puerto Rico and Florida regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and national accreditation standards Ensure program compliance with the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) Professional Optometric Degree Program Standards Integrate clinical competencies, simulation, and hybrid/online learning best practices Support preparation for the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) examination series — Part I (Applied Basic Science), Part II (Patient Assessment and Management), and Part III (Patient Encounter Performance Standards) Support preparation of accreditation documentation, self-study reports, and program outcomes assessment Collaborate with curriculum specialists, instructional designers, and academic leadership Qualifications: Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree Active, unrestricted optometry license preferred Minimum 5+ years of clinical and/or academic experience in Optometry Prior experience in curriculum development, program review, or accreditation processes preferred Strong knowledge of clinical optometry (ocular disease, refraction, binocular vision, contact lenses, and low vision) Familiarity with competency-based education models Regulatory & Accreditation Knowledge (Required): Working knowledge of ACOE accreditation standards, the recognized benchmark for Doctor of Optometry programs in the U.S. Understanding of optometry licensure and the role of the NBEO examinations in both Puerto Rico and Florida Knowledge of clinical education requirements and preparation for the NBEO three-part examination series Preferred Skills: Experience designing doctoral-level (OD) programs Knowledge of clinical partnerships, externship, and residency models Experience working with Learning Management Systems (LMS) Expected Deliverables: Program framework and curriculum recommendations Course sequencing review Course descriptions and learning outcomes validation Industry competency mapping Regulatory and accreditation guidance Review of program documentation and submission materials Participation in meetings with institutional leadership and curriculum teams Equal Opportunity Employer Statement: We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our academic and professional community.
