School Safety and Support

Position Summary The Safety Support Staff plays a vital role in promoting a safe, welcoming, and supportive school environment. This position supports students, staff, and visitors by monitoring school facilities, addressing safety concerns, and fostering a positive school culture. Strong relationship-building skills, situational awareness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are key to success. Key Responsibilities Monitor and control access to school buildings and designated areas. Conduct routine safety patrols, documenting and addressing risks or concerns. Support daily safety procedures using on-site equipment. Assist in emergencies, following protocols and coordinating with school staff. Collaborate with administrators, teachers, and support staff to maintain a secure and positive environment. Resolve conflicts proactively using restorative practices and de-escalation strategies. Provide supervision during transitions, lunch periods, and extracurricular events. Assist with crowd control and student movement as needed. Document incidents thoroughly and communicate with safety administration. Support the district’s strategic goals and other duties as assigned. Required Skills & Abilities Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations. Strong relationship-building and conflict resolution skills. Consistent, fair, and respectful approach when working with students and staff. Ability to multitask, work independently, and take direction from multiple supervisors. Flexibility and adaptability in response to changing school needs. Commitment to confidentiality and professional conduct. Physical ability to walk/stand for extended periods, respond quickly in emergencies, and assist with student supervision. Training & Development Employees will receive training in: ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) CSTAG (Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Youth Mental Health First Aid Trauma-Sensitive Practices Restorative Practices & Conflict Resolution Safety Equipment Operations Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent (required). Experience working with youth or in a supervisory/support role (preferred). Experience supporting diverse student populations (preferred). CPR/AED certification (preferred). Additional coursework in equity, diversity, social justice, or trauma-informed care is a plus. Work Environment & Physical Demands Active school environment with frequent walking, standing, and interaction. Ability to walk/run quickly during emergencies. Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds and respond to active situations. Occasional evening or weekend work required for events or emergencies. May travel between schools within the district.
